Not a lot to select from
Most people fish inside the main reef directly in front of the beach access. On a low low tide you can walk out on that reef and fish the ocean side. Or if the swell is smallish you can fish the holes between the reef sections heading southward.
Old fishermen never die they just smell that way.

Lot more coast to travel
First section of Whitehills has a lot of reef which is fishable in lowish swell. second section is all sand with some parts of the beach getting very narrow may have to get tyres wet to get through or only passable on low tide. Middle section has more reef which is quite fishable but not much room to park off the main track. Then ya back to sand all the way to Preston beach. Along the sand sections look for deeper water/gutters with in casting range, slow constant quantities of burley should bring the fish to you. No special/secret spots along either beach.
