Today's venture SOR.

Took my newly acquired tub out for a ride today. What was going to be a day of pulling my pots and then taking my 10 and 8yo nieces to look at penguins and seals ended up with me and the dog out for a play.

Pot was unfortunately stuck and with the surge, I wasn't going to get too close to the rock it was under so I headed south to try for Tailor south of penguin island. Could see the bastards on the reef, and at one point had 4 or so of them chasing my plug, but that was as close as they got. Kept heading south and came across another patch of white water where I could see Tailor on the reef bu couldn't get them interested.

Kept working south, now half playing to see how far I could get out of a tank of fuel. For to south of long point where I came across a cray boat dropping pots. Trawled amongst the oil slicks but nothing was interested so set myself up wind and threw in a few chunks of shark mak. Plenty of big tugs and with 1 minute to go on my timer the drag went off. My reel has mostly braid on it, but the last 50 or so meters is light mono...well that started to peel off so I had to start chasing whatever I was attached to.

Finally started to see braid coming out of the water and onto my reel and continued to chase. At times I wonder if I had been snagged and held my hand on the spool only to agrivate whatever I had hooked, making it go for another run.

After 30 minutes of this, I deduced to tighten up drag a little which pissed off the other end of the line. I was chasing at around 8 knots to maintain line on my rod then it all went limp.

Pulled up my line and all gone. No chew marks so no idea what I had.

Overall, 30 miles on 15l of fuel. Dog is sleeping and the boat didn't sink. Good times.

That makes my fishing ventures for this year at 8 herring from 6 trips out.....

Never mind

We have all had days like that. At least you tried a few different things. Cant do more than that. Its a lot better than a day at the office & no doubt you will improve your tally for the year. What size engine do you have to get  30 miles on 15 Litres?

Dog is sound asleep so it

Dog is sound asleep so it must have been fun.

Boat is a 6m penguin hulled, centre console. Has a 75 etec on it with 62 hrs on the clock.

Rides extremely comfortably at 15-18 knots. Can hit 29 but that is a but sphincter puckering.

Upgraded from 3.95m tinny with 20hp mariner which has contributed greatly to having early hearing loss on my left hand side....or it could just be my wife sits on that side of the car...

I might have to look at an etec when i re new my outboard. I have an old  40 hp Merc on a 4.5 mtr pressed ali & my fuel useage would be the other way around. 15 mile on 30 Lit. Old joke about the wife. Cop pulls a fellow over on the highway. Says "Hey Mate, didnt you notice that your wife fell out of your car 10 miles back?. Bloke replies "Thank God - I thought I'd gone deaf"

Just did the sums, 25 miles

Mon, 2014-03-17 08:09

Just did the sums, 25 miles on 15l most of which was just cruising along (dog gets airborne in the bow if I go too fast) at 14-15 knots. The only time I opened up was for the last 1/4 of a NM to the ramp. Enough to make my cheeks flap....

Great motor, and you can have a conversation when cruising along too.

I was thinking sambo as it

Sun, 2014-03-16 20:56

I was thinking sambo as it had a lot of power, didn't leave damaged leader like a shark would, and didn't pull like a ray would.

It really showed me that the current boat setup isn't ideal for one person, fishing with two rods and a dog that looses it's shit when a drag goes off.

Few mods on the cards.

Good story Swompa, had days like that myself, but it is always the same when you try to tell everyone else. They just arent quite as excited as you were about it all. I bet your heart was pumping there for a while though?

Got the squirts once after a long swim, but I don't let her swim until right at the end and problem solved.

She generally has a big wee and poop once back to the sandy stuff.
