totally disgusted

My mate and I have been fishing quite a lot these past few months on the beach and on the Swan River. Every time we have fished i we speak to people that complain about the Asians and Indians that come here and take every fish they catch regardless of their size. Then as we are fishing with these same people (not wanting to be racist but they are white Australians) we see them catching plenty of juveniles AND KEEPING THEM! Taking home Bream that clearly are undersize and choppers that would be lucky to be 15cms long!

We have said to a few of them that the fish look undersize and then they turn and say "One won't hurt" yet they have a bucket load! Same goes with crabs. It is easier to blame the Asians and indians, than it is to take responsibility for their own actions.

Last night I threw a Bream back that was 24cm long (undersize by 1cm). This guy that was there fishing as well said "It is only just undersize mate, keep it." This attitude outrages me.

Totally understand your disgust MacMan, a very selfish attitude to keep under sized fish - that's what, in part, 'Fish for the Future' is all about.  call fishwatch.

  The 24 hour fish watch

Sun, 2008-04-20 09:34

The 24 hour fish watch have never responded to any phone calls I have made to them. I have given up, This also outrages me as Mac Man said individuals of every race have the same attitude.

Your really stuck with what to do as you have to watch who you approach with this sort of thing also safety reasons, and the correct authoritys don't seem to respond.

It's a shame people are so selfish...and it happens everywhere. It's gotta be pretty damaging to the stocks.

We had a man from Asain descent come into our work the other day looking for clips you use for longlining.

Went to get his rego but caught the train. Makes you wonder how many people are fishing illegally one way or another?

People laughed at Reg Hunt for kissing undersized fish & throwing them back but thankfully he has instilled the habit into many Aussies as they grow up. Pity we cant get the Dalli Lama to appear in a fishing show & do likewise!!

rather be fishin`!!!

Call Fishwatch

Mon, 2008-04-21 09:41

I never hesistate to call Fishwatch and dob people in.  I might say something to people but I will not get into a punch up over it.  I have seen blokes (not of asian decent) set up meat grinders on the jetty and grind through anything they catch.  i wont put up with it.

Sad About Fishwatch

Mon, 2008-04-21 10:44

The comments some have you made about the lack of response from Fishwatch is very saddening. As we all agree, this sort of activity needs to be clamped down on HARD. I also agree that, whilst the act and (fish) result is noble, personally intervening is a risky business.

Mon, 2008-04-21 13:21

its interesting how easy it is to be dubbed "asian", i am viet and it is fairly evident that people of my race do take what they can get...and i agree with all your comments.

However, this stereotyping is a bit discriminating and unfair. I'm just having a whinge, but i have had countless encounters with "white Australians" making racist remarks whilst fishing. I was targetting small yellowtail for bait for my deepsea fishing trip...and recieved comments like "fckin chinks...go home...dont catch all our fish" and my car was consequently smeared with burley and fish guts.

I've even had them try calling fisheries...even tho I had one tailor in my bucket...

fair go i say...

I completely understand and agree with you JoRn.  We are too quick to blame the asians for it but it isn't one particular nationality, race, or some such thing.  There are people from all walks of life that do it and they all should be punished by the authorities, not vigilante groups.  I am sorry to hear about your car being attacked.

Mon, 2008-04-21 13:39

Hi,

As was stated in prevouse post its very much a multicultural problem every race has individuals that take undersize fish,

I have had some dis-regarding looks also from collecting bait in the form of gang hook size yellowtail, the people making comments did'nt know everything I was doing was perfectly legal.

Does anyone actually know how many fisheries officers there are patrolling if any?

Fair go, to right...

Its all good, I've had a good run lately so not many dramas...i am 6ft+ and 100kg+ also hahaha.

In terms of fishery's i think ive cited them once at the traffic bridge, and several times during abalone season.

There were conducting a survey or something a few months back on the boats returning to ocean reef...but besides that nope.

Mon, 2008-04-21 14:28

I am taking a stab in the dark here, but i think its all about funding, with the new government, funding has been cut everywhere including my area...i work for the government too..they have us by the b@lls.

I am assuming that fisheries are paid(?), the ones that can dish out fines and penalties due to the delegation of power...and how many would be prepared to work at 8/9pm or even sundays....without being compensated in the form of overtime pay...

government workers are renowned for NOT working overtime...hahaha speaking of which, which day should i take off to fish...ahha!

This could be part of the problem and something that has crossed my mind however this does not negate the fact we are all tax payers. The policing of rereational fishing in this contence definatly needs a shake up I think.

yeah, I have seen it all, and when the powers above had made their decisions theres not much recourse.

the 4 month ban in my opinion is exactly that, instead of preventing the issue with other worthwhile rememdy, they wait til its too late and find the most "feasible" way or the fastest bandaid solution...this is prolly done to death so i'll just leave it there...

oh well.

Mon, 2008-04-21 17:47

I am kind of surprised at some of the responses. I know on the whole it would be fair to say it is mainly immirgrants that do take undersize fish. The point I was making mainly was how these white Aussies (of which I am one, although I never take undersize fish)  can sit bagging on the "Asians" yet go ahead and do exactly what they are complaining about!

I would never go advocating chuck the contents of their buckets out as I don't want to incite violence. There is very little, as an indivdual, that I can do. It also is worrying to read that others have called the fisheries department but no action taken.

I dont think any of the so called white aussies on this thread keep any under size fish there Macman i know i dont i suppose the main problem comes down to education. in australia we get taught about these things we have rules and regulations to follow other countrys are different hence different attitudes towards fisherys as far as tipping the bucket back hell yeah CHEERS SHAG

Cultural and behavioural

Tue, 2008-04-22 06:07

Cultural and behavioural idiosyncrasies are a lame excuse for anyone not ahering to local bag and size limits.
As an Aussie expat, I've lived in several Asian countries, and the first thing you do is respect local law and customs. There should be zero tolerance across the board, no exceptions. Taking undersized fish or exceeding bag limits is the same as stealing, and should be treated as such......IMO
