Touchscreen vs Pushbutton sounder/plotter

Hi guys,

I am in the market for a MFD, and I am stuck choosing between the Garmin GPSMAP 1222xsv and the GPSMAP 7410xsv. The 7410 is touchscreen and marginally cheaper, but the 1222 has the larger screen at a good price point.

I guess the main questions are, is the 12' vs 10' screen worth giving up touchscreen ability, and are touchscreens worth it?

I often bait fish, and when im jigging and trolling I wear gloves. My concern with touchscreen is it will get dirty and hard to read, and will it work with gloves and messy hands? Also how does the sensitivity of the screen go long term? My experience is the more there is to go wrong the more that will, and im concerned 3-5 years down the track my 4K worth of MFD will be a challenge to use of it loses sensitivity. Whereas a button unit can easily have the keys repaired/replaced.

Any experience/opinion is welcome as this will be a significant purchase!

Thanks!

 Went through the exact same

Went through the exact same thing and ended up with 7410xsv.Pros outweight the cons big time

Screen works fine when wet/dirty.I carry a small spray bottle with detergent/water onboard and a microfibre cloth.Takes 5 seconds to clean if its really bad.

Big problem with the touch screen if trying to do stuff on the move as you finger can move slighty but after a while you get used to it and its not such a big deal.

Touch screen so much faster going through menus and punching in co ords.I would never go back to push button on this alone.

You can get keypad for the 74++ series if you so desire or control it off your phone/tablet.If you worried about it losing screen sensitivity over time.

Easy choice if you ask after putting a few hundred hours of use on mine in a open center console where its cops the weather.

 Thanks Nelly! I wasnt aware

 Thanks Nelly!

I wasnt aware that you could get the GRID remote... Makes me lean in favour of the 7410... I really would like the extra real estate of the 12' screen, but its still more costly than the 7410 with the remote.

The typing in coords makes a solid point, would be much easier with a touchscreen.

Which transducer are you using with it? I have been looking at the GT-51M-TM, as the bulk of my fishing is sub 100m, and I dont fish electrics.

Have you ever had any issues with yours or had to deal with Garmin at all?

I have read the waypoint management in the charting can be a pain in the ass, as they clump waypoints into groups...

Sorry for all the questions, I want to make the most informed descision I can!

 7410xsv for sure. Has built

Mon, 2017-02-20 20:30

7410xsv for sure. Has built in dual channel chirp sonar. 1222 is only single channel. 7410 also has 12-pin & 8-pin ports so u can connect two trannys direct to the unit. 1222 only has a 12-pin

i have just installed two 7410xsvs and early days but love em so far. No dramas with touch screen. Every know and then when you running in rough seas u might slip a bit but the speed and ease of use the rest of the the time more than makes up for it. I won't go back to a button mfd. Touchscreen units are also a smaller physical size overall if trying to flushmount multiple units on the dash.

I haven't had a chance to install my GT51M-TH yet but all reports are that they are a fantastic tranny. It's next on my to-do list. Plenty of reading on The Hull Truth in the electronics forum.

My only complaint is that the best Garmin Bluchart G2 maps you can get don't have quite as much detail as Navionics and your limited to garmins charts in their units.

You could always go the 7412xsv if your worried about screen size mate!

Touch screens are great. Just make sure you have somewhere to rest your elbow while using it... its alot easier when your arm is stable

 Hi guys,Thanks for all the

 Hi guys,

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm gonna go with the 7410xsv coupled with the GT51 transducer. As much as I would love the 7412 I cant justify another 900 bucks for a little more screen realestate...

Ill try and post a couple of pics and when its all done.

I have a Lowrance HDS9 gen 2 touch screen and wouldn't have it any other way now. So easy to pinpoint waypoints with the cursor and navigate.
