Tough Day on the Water
Submitted by JohnF on Sat, 2013-08-03 18:48
Had planned on hitting the deep drop today but weather did not play the game, seabreeze underestimating the wind strength in the morning by some margin. Was pretty nice after lunch, so just punted about in the 40-80's..
Did a lot of km, dropped a lot of jigs and got stuff all. One of the toughest demersal jig days for a long time.
Stopped for a sambo jig on the way home to make us feel better.........went pretty hard on PE3.
Nice to meet you today Dougie.

Yeah Paul, a deep drop day in
Yeah Paul, a deep drop day in 15 knots and no fish certainly makes you question it!!!!
Easterly was whipping up a nasty sharp chop early so we stuffed about in the 30's, but all we could catch was rat sambos and lots of them.......probably could have got out and had a drop in the end as after lunch was OK but you really need primo wind conditons for deep drop as there are already a lot of factors against you.
We just could not entice a demersal on jig today, despite seeing a lot of good shows. Frustrating!

agree,
Choose not to waste to much time on the deep drop and slayed some pinkies and sambos instead. Pinks were only liking bait though. When i was seeing fish high off the bottom it had me worried.

Hey John, We planned to go
Hey John,
We planned to go deep on the Saturday. Headed out about 6:15am and the wind conditions were well up and over the sea breeze forecast. We decided to stay close instead, around the 50 - 90 meter mark as well. Interestingly, when we threw out the sea anchor we ended up drifting against the wind which made for holding nice bottom. Gotta love those deep current movements.
Being a bait person all my life, I decided to test run jigs for the whole day, whilst the other two guys on my boat used baits. I expect it may be my technique but I really struggled with the jigs, whilst the other guys were pulling in cracker dhufish, harlequin fish, blackass, sweep etc all around me ... I might have to pop into Oceanside Tackle to see what I'm doing wrong on the jigs...
PS: The new sounder is working a treat so far :) Will email you some sounder pics next time.
