Towing 3t boat to exmouth??

Hi guys I am having a bit of a dilema at the moment.

We are set to leave in 4 week to exmouth for 10 days with a few friends

I have a 2352 trophy that I would like to take to exmouth without any fuel she sits at just under 3t

problem is that my hilux although i feel is more than capable of doing this is actually illegal to tow this sort of weight.

any suggestions on what can be done?

The landcruisers from hire companys that I have called only have 2t towbars which kill that idea

Engineering the Hilux to increase towing capacity could be upwards of 3 grand?

Getting it trucked up there and back?

Hiring a boat up there?

You own a 3T boat but dont have a sufficient tow vehicle?

What do you tow it around with in Perth, assuming the Hilux?

Not wanting to have a dig or anything, merely wanting to point out if you didnt know... but you realise you arent covered by ANY insurance right?

My suggestion would be if you cannot find a vehicle to tow it with, then just hire a boat and take your marks up with you (if you have been there before and have them that is)

Yep - Sammy is right, did a bit of research before i got mine on tow capacity - you are liable in the case of a crash its just not worth it, you prob know that but i wouldnt even drive it around perth, i would bite the bullet and get the upgrade on the lux - im no expert might just need to add a turbo to boost the KW to about 2.8 ton.

In the long run it might just save you the 3k in the upgrade and you will be able to tow it anywhere with the comfort of knowing you are covered.

just at a guestimate - hiring a boat would be $250 a day

Getting it trucked up would be very expensive being 3m, over length which includes permits etc all the way up. Again cheaper to get the lux upgraded.

only a personal view.

I did read your whole post.

I know you say you might feel capable of doing it with the Lux, and that you know it is illegal (as in caught by coppers weighing your towing load) to do so..

However what i was pointing out is that should you be in a accident, or pop a tyre on the Lux and crash/jackknife OR god forbid crash into someone, then you arent covered for anything even though you might be insured. That's a lot of cash going down the dunny if the unfortunate were to happen....

And trust me, it does happen...

I've seen many boats busted up on the side of the road between here and Exxy, not to mention only 2 weeks ago watching the Landcruiser and Caravan in front of me jackknife after popping a tyre that was only a few thousand KMs old.

Therefore regardless of you thinking that the car is capable of doing it, is it really worth the cost of what could happen? Even around Perth, is it worth it?

Spend the cash upgrading or engineering the car now to save what could turn into a headache later down the track, or in the meantime hire a smaller boat.

It's not worth it.

You née dt o look at your gcm

Thu, 2013-05-23 14:54

You cannot increase your tow capacity this means increasing your gcm I used to be able to increase the gcm for customers but the dpi have put a stop to it.
You can only increase your gvm which is your load carrying capacity this will not help you with the towing capacity

not possible

you cannot increase the tow capacity past what the manufacturer says when it is built.

Some vehicles can increase the GVM but not the GTM

Im with tim-o on this one, just pick your days and hire a boat.

Fuel in your lux just to get it there and back would be $500 Theres 2 days fishing!

I had a mate that towed his cat with his 'more than capable hilux' Lets just say one day it wasnt and went for a swim at the ramp.

I bit the bullet when i bought my new boat and bought a 3.5t vehicle and everything about it is better.

Borrow a smaller rig to take up ? There is plenty of diving and fishing in close.

Thu, 2013-05-23 21:34

So you buy a boat with a realistic tow weight of closer to 3.5t loaded ready to fish and have a car with a tow weight of 2.5t. Derp.

Go find a wall, bang your head on it a few times then see if you have any sense. Then you may find the answer you seek.

yep hire the truck.   most small 2 T trucks can be driven with normal license.  and plenty of dual cabs in that range..   ie 4 x guys to put in for costs etc.

cant beat having your own and trusted boat up north.

your trophy is going to be better than anything you can hire.

No need to have a dig mate, its a forum where you asked a question and people are providing feedback.

I never said that you did drive it around in perth, I merely asked if you did and provided suggestions of what to do instead of taking the Hilux as you requested.

Also did my best to convince you not to take the Lux with the Trophy on the back, which I am sure you agree is not a good idea

Enjoy your trip...

Trade your hilux in NOW for a Ford Ranger or other type of newer ute that has the 3.5 ton towing capacity you are chasing...

Failing that...  Ill swap you my 3.8m Markham Whaler for your Trophy!!!  That should solve your weight problem!!

It's in reference to brads description that he called landcruiser places to hire one but they only had 2t rated bars. I thought they were all 3.5t bars as standard?

Yea - you might wanna go back to your owner's manual and double check the ratings - no good buying a new vehicle on the basis of hear-say

Thanks gents I havnt been

Wed, 2013-06-19 10:12

Thanks gents I havnt been back online but im heading off to exmout this afternoon

ended up borrowing a ford ranger with 3t towing

so ive drained all the fuel and im scraping in on the weight department

will be a slow long drive but hopefully worth it

Hey vinnie I got the trailer all registered in the end

was a prick of a thing to do

mainly because I was unaware/ignorant of a few things

had to shorten the axles down 40mm and hunted around have some rims with different offset to get within 2.5m

I will hopefully update that page i started about the trailer when I get back.

I think in regards to the Landcrusier towing

I am not sure if the downgrade the tow balls to 2t or they just BS you so you dont try and tow anything over 2 t that is just what I was told when I enquired
