Towing out of dead Whale

Cant believe it took that many years for the government to realise the towing of whale carcasses to sea (at least in the metro area's) was the best choice. Obviously, the operation would be weather dependant.

https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/25474822/whale-removal-cost-170-000/

The issue was discussed on FW previously, and more to the point for us fisho's someone advised towing out a whale to decompose at sea would benefit the marine food chain for years.

The city of Rockingham is actually collecting beached whales and towing them to just north of Rottnest so the tides wash them on Scarborough beach as a big FU to the northern suburbs...shit I have said too much.

Mon, 2014-11-10 21:48

Just got to get it out far enough that it washes up on a beach in a less inhabited part of the coast.

How could it fail !!!!!

Mon, 2014-11-10 22:22

If there is doubt about it washing up again, get the navy to go for the ride with a few kilos of PE4 (it's very cheap) and place it in the whale retreat to a safe distance then wooopa no big bits of whale left. If charges are set in the body of the whale the sharks won't be hurt so their safety is not an issue. Hell it's not like you are trying to put an object into a orbit around the earth.

Explosives in the marine environment is not a good look for obvious reasons and much better just let the sharks clean them up.

What are the obvious reasons, if its in water 400m+ deep what is it going to affect. Unless there are a few big whites hanging off it but no loss there.

The answer there is not much, unless you are a

poor innocent Dolphin fish or other pelagic swimming past. It will not create a shock wave that will effect the Ocean floor at that range as the force would have dissipated at that depth, as distance rapidly decrease the effect. Shallow water obviously is a different issue as craters are fomed, see for example dynamite fishing.

I think it would be a far better option than letting them drift ashore causing a berley trial that will bring GWS closer to shore, and the cost and disposal issues.

shock waves (essentially sound) travels better in denser material, the distance will reduce the force to something less destructive, but the pressure waves (sound) may still be extremely upsetting to sea life.

That said. Loud noises may also have no damaging effects on marine life.

  Gonna keep happening more

Tue, 2014-11-11 07:15

Gonna keep happening more and more often as the Whale population continues to explode, think they were up to 33000 or something stupid travelling the west coast alone last year, only stands to reason that the more numbers offers increased likely hood of sick and or dieing animals washing up on beaches.

It's a known fact that GW's return to the same areas year after year, so why not moor these dead animals way the f@#k off the coast and set up a feeding station type scenario this will attract big bities away from beaches and out too sea untill the water warms up and they piss off around the SW corner in Jan/Feb.

1- Gets the Whales off the coast and back into the food chain.

2- Gives the Whites what they want (Whale migration the reason they are up and down the WA coast this time of year).

3- Potentially (Definately) attract GW away from coastal zone.

4- Fill the big arse belly's up with Whale meat not surfers.

5- Roll on effect - if the whales are moored in the same place consistantly the sharks will return to this area year after year for the chance of easy meal.

6- Will provide and oportunity to tag and monitor numerous sharks.

Two birds one stone.

Problem solved.

Cheers Boomer

 is there a fishing excusion

Tue, 2014-11-11 13:48

is there a fishing excusion zone when they tow them out like this.

I could see many boaties hanging around hoping for some other (not shark) type of fish.

The difficulty with the dead ones floating close to shore is when they actually notice one. By then its probably so decomposed that that it may break apart close to the shore thus spreading it around with current and making it worse. They cant win at times.

Tue, 2014-11-11 13:56

This excuse that keeps coming up that they break apart while under tow because of decomposition is a cop out. How hard would it be to wrap the thing in a flexable mesh. That would then give them a few spread out anchor points for towing. I still reckon they should exempt these dead carcasses from processing. Render them down for burley oil, I'd pay $50 a litre for the stuff it's that good. And sell off the teeth etc to fund these salvage operations.

 There is a slight problem

Tue, 2014-11-11 15:44

There is a slight problem with laws there. Thats why you cannot get whale oil again.  Also the total cost to process the odd carcass as you say would ve quite large. Unless you know what it would cost.

Officer I saw this 20kg dhu floating obviously dead ao I decided to scoop it up and process it as burley for later on..

You have a good idea.... why not design something and make a profession out of it. Government have heaps of money.

Yeah just thinking out loud. They apparently had to remove tons of sand from Scarborough as the oil from the carcass had seeped quite deep. I remember using the stuff when I was a kid with the old man. The water used to literally bubble with fish when we used a bit.

Tow them out with the mesh

Sun, 2014-11-16 08:29

Tow them out with the mesh and anchor them down, wont float in then and only small bits may escape which would be eaten.

perhaps theres a reason why not to, would it make more sence to tow from the head rather than the tail? just need a sharpiesh hook or 2 , just seems more stream line that way .

FFS some of this shit grates me....

There is 170k worth of reasons plus the danger factor to fuck them off AS FAR AS NECASSARY!!

Once out that far who gives a toss what they do but fuck them off out of harms way...

Are we seriously that retarded...

Its almost a waste of ink replying here because anyone with common sense is not going to need convincing...

I mean I guess if we really need to do a trial we could skull drag everything that croakes it offshore up onto Cott beach... You know cost savings VS legs missing sorta dealio

I wonder how much Clive Palmer is going to have to spend to get the Lambie stench off the Tassi coast...

Have you Noticed.

Sun, 2014-11-16 10:39

There's been no more reports about the location of the whale that was towed out deep which suggests it has been devoured.
