Transducer position?

 Hi all,

I am about to add a new sounder to the boat (Furuno 587) with a 1kW transom mount tranny.

question is, where do I locate the tranny?

i currently have a couple of lowrance units set up for GPS and sounder, with a normal 600w tranny on the back, and ideally would like to keep it as a backup and use the Furuno independently, but also want the 1kW in the best position.

photos below show where the current one is.

option are to replace current tranny with the 1kW and then refit the 600w?

install the 1kW on the opposite side of the keel and just leave the current one where it is?

there are twin outboards on the boat (not counter rotating), so I am thinking that having it in between the port engine and the keel, bolted straight onto the transom should be ok.

thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

brett

I'd put it the other side of the bung but in around the same position.  the one you have looks like its angle forward (down at rear) a little to much but if you angle it back it may be a little too high (hard to tell from the pic).

yep, way too much angle on the existing tranny, but better than not enough. You really want just enough to stop cavitation.

A lot of guys with twin motors seem to put the tranny right in the middle, not sure if this adds any issues?

 Thanks Paul and John,

yeah I thought that the current ones angle was a bit much but it reads ok so I haven't played with it that much.

installed the new sounder and tranny today. Put it on the opposite side of the bung  and a tad closer to the bung than the current one. Inside edge of the transducer is about level with the bottom of the hull and so the outside edge is probably about 20mm below.

will throw up a photo tomorrow when I have some light and hopefully get it in the water as well to see how it goes- weather pending. If so, will put up some other shots and maybe some comparisons with the lowrance units.

cheers

 best thing to check for

best thing to check for strakes etc under the hull.sea test and look for clear water at back of transom.fit in that location if possible
