Hope

Fri, 2015-07-17 07:11

Not holding much hope for them, was 5 days after the beacon signal shut down before the alarm was raised. Debris and the life raft have been found.
The owner is well known and respected in Carnarvon and Geraldton areas where he has fished for many years.

Transponder

Fri, 2015-07-17 10:52

Its a transponder that records the boats movements so fisheries can track their progress. All trawlers, shark netters and wetliners have to have them fitted. Would have stopped when the boat went down.
Sounds like it went down very quickly with the liferaft complete with epirb being found. Raft would have been able to float free after hydrostatic coupling released.

I sail with a bloke who was sailing up that way, hit something and before he could get a distress call out, his boat was gone.

He was spotted by a rig crew change chopper in his life raft the next day.

All he had were the clothes he was wearing.

hope these blokes are found., quickly.

Pretty sure that was the fisheries tracker that is being talked about. Guessing these things fail occasionally and have been known to be tampered with by shonky crews.

No suggestion anything more serious had happened at that point. All they would of got from fisheries was a please explain when they got back to the harbour.

Fri, 2015-07-17 15:30

Its called a VMS (vessel monitoring system) and isnt for search and rescue its so Fisheries can monitor where a vessel is fishing.

As they are switched off when the vessel is in port, it wouldnt raise an alarm if it stopped unfortunately.

It's unfortunate because I wouldn't think any recreational boats would have been in the area over the last week because the weather has been howling a constant 25-30 knts. The swell has also been up which has turned the ocean into a washing machine.

By the sounds of it they weren't that far out to sea. If their gear has washed up on dolphin island I wouldn't have thought they'd be further out than Delambre/Legendre.

I worked on prawn and fish

Fri, 2015-07-17 15:57

I worked on prawn and fish trawlers out of Samson for a year and a half. The VMS does let fisheries know where you are but they have a lot of problems when theyre a bit older. And sometimes if you want a quick look in an area youre not meant to be to be in, a metal bucket over the VMS aerial will give you 24-48hrs before you get a call on the sat phone. ( apparently)

the main thing with a prawn trawler is you have 2 nets out. One off each boom. If you hook up on the bottom or shoot away too quick and bog your boards in the mud you have to act f$&8ing quick or youre in all sorts of trouble.

I hope somehow every ones on

Sun, 2015-07-19 14:00

Thats bullshit that alarms dont go off when VMS goes down. I work on a snapper boat out of Carnarvon and our VMS went down for 2 hours and fisheries were calling the owner of the boat and calling the satellite phone on the boat to find out what was going on.

With Murray just buying and refitting his boat im sure his electronics were all in order.

Sun, 2015-07-19 14:18

may well do but its certainly not monitored as a safety device, and if they rang RCC everytime a VMS "went offline" it'd just be out of control.

Im not up to date with VMS nowadays but normally they get switched off when in port as well so it would be chaos.

Odd thing is that its reported that it went offline at 0100 but one of the crews brothers got a text at 1.37-not sure how often the VMS does a "handshake" though?

We have to send VMS a message when leaving port and when we return, probably the same for prawn trawlers. So should be pretty easy for them to see what boats are in and out.

Ours goes down for 2 hours they are all over us, Returners can go down for 5 days and no questions asked... Not good enough.

Yep exactly. Just another thing to show how useless VMS is. I've seen it go off and a patrol boat get sent out straight away to boats close to major cities yet this happens and fisheries do nothing. Pretty weak really. Happened on a weekend too in which the VMS department doesn't work.

questions

Sun, 2015-07-19 18:42

I think in time all the questions will be answered but more importantly is to find the vessel where it went dwn and hopefully the boys.

I do think that even tho lot of us have donated money to continue the search w private craft the govt should be coming to the party with open arms to utilise all and any search vessels possible at no expense to the family and friends!

The govis happy to spend money on looking for a stupid airliner from another country yet family and friends now have to pay to keep the search going! That pisses me off more right now!

We want our mates found either way and its gona cost us not the govt.

The rest will be answeredin good time either way.

We need some sort of closure and from losing my cousin years ago at the abrohlos crayfishing I feel the pain of the carters n fairlys.

In the end as commercial fishos we all know the risk of working on deck. Its part of the job! The sea doesnt give up her bounty easily.

Chaddy n hillbilly are legends and will be found either way xxx

Sun, 2015-07-19 19:46

Only met Chad a few times when him and Murray were in Carnarvon recently getting ready to head north. Chad tied his dinghy up to the jetty at high tide and as the tide went down he hung his boat, was pretty funny watching him jump in and cut the ropes and drop back to the water. Seemed like a top bloke and Murray is a legend up there.

Yes there is a distress / mayday button on most boats clearly marked with glass screen over it, although none on ours.

All our EPIRBs are water activated aswell, why werent Returners?

There are some pics of Terumi J getting a suntan on its bum down in Turtle Bay, could well have been another like what has happened here.

The ring in system for wetliners is to record the time they are actually fishing because they now have a time limit on the catch units, that is the reason why they are leaving at midnight and getting back it close to it so you maximise the time you have available

Tracplus

Mon, 2015-07-20 10:22

We have system on our rescue vessels called Tracplus. It allows us to monitor our vessel when underway during searches and long tows. It gives a ping every 10 minutes which can be adjusted whilst underway and every hour when stationery. Only operates when batteries on. If vessel comtact is lost by radio we have an approximate last known position. It works via satilites and i can track our vessels on my Iphone, Ipad or laptop. It also retain historic data from previous days.

The ping provide the GPS position direction and speed

Cost - approx $1500 per boat and 10cents per ping. I believe most VMR group have it now.

Maybe fishing vessels should have this as manditory equipment.

Our prayers are with the families

I was out on the water

Mon, 2015-07-20 11:43

I was out on the water yesterday and i wouldn't have wanted to be in the open ocean for sure. We spotted a black bouy with some gear on it but some marine growth (yes i reported it, it's co-ordinates and a photo to the police) on Sailfish Reef it was black with a green cross on it. If thier nets did dig in with the type of tight chop short swell out there it wouldn't take much to upturn the boat for sure.

Prayers with the family. i agree with the AIS comment too, low cost unit that has real time tracking, software can be set with warning zones on maps etc.

I know the crew on that one well... without naming exact names, macca, muzz and benny were very lucky that night by the sounds of the story... probably a bit exaggerated now but it involves a unplanned midnight swim, one single flare and a somehow never-got-wet packet of ciggies and box of BBQ shapes.
