DIY motor service issues

So I had my first go at carrying out the service on my 135hp mercury 2 stroke today, including changing the water pump and top housing. When I pulled the lower section out, the water pump to motor feed pipe came with it, now I can't seem to get the lower unit back in. I cant get the water pipe to seat back in the motor, the pipe is a but floppy out the water pump (flexing on the seal) and therefore won't line up at the motor end. I read the manual, can't find any tips or hints and have looked on YouTube and all the video's showing water pump replacemt do not show the water pipe, so I am assuming it is meant to stay in the motor and leg when pulling the lower unit out. Had any one come across this, and/or any ideas??

Thanks

Normally the water pipe stays in the motor head

Therefore I would be shining a torch up the top end of the casing and seeing if there is anything that has come adrift whilst removing the leg. In nothing appears out of the ordinary, remove the water tube from the leg and install separately back into the cowling / engine prior to refitting the leg. I would use some form or sealant and or permatex prior to refitting however be careful not to overdo it, use sparingly.

From what I remember with my 175 Mercury it did come out with a short tube attached to the water pump, so that sounds normal to me. The biggest hassle was meshing the spline on the gearbox shift other than that it was pretty straight forward. I could be wrong but I think it will be the gearbox alignment that will be where it's going wrong

Definately the water pipe, if I remove it and put the lower case in, it fits easy as, so everything else is lining up right.

By water pipe I am assuming you are talking about the coupler, you should be to remove it from the water pump  and check that it slides free on the delivery pipe. The coupler has to remain on the water pump during assembly if it's put in the leg first it would be near impossible to align, from what I can remember the coupler was cut at a angle, the angled end was at the top
