Trigg Blue Hole

Hi,

Not the first time this has been asked, but I haven't been able to find a clear description of where people can safely fish on the actual reef at Trigg.

I've added a couple of images to make it easier. Is it possible to wade out to the area in the first image where the lower red arrow is? I know it doesn't seem likely, but gotta ask to be sure.

How about the hole where the top red arrow points to? Is this normally fished from Trigg Island?

In the second image, I've circled around what I understand to be the "Blue Hole". Am I right about that?

Any tips for my own and others safety (and productive fishing) would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure which is actually

Fri, 2017-10-27 15:13

Not sure which is actually the blue hole, but i’ve always thought of the channel in the bottom image as being the blue hole. Sure the surfers or locals on here can confirm that one.

I used to fish both spots a lot and the channel in the bottom pick holds big tarwine and whiting at times. The reef in the top pick holds massive tarwine at night. Use a float rig to help reduce snagging - cast and don’t wind unless you have a fish.

Warning- I have fished off both reefs during low swell (below knee height) but stopped doing this when a freak wave (head height) got me one day. I would only fish off the actual reef if I had a tripod like the salmon fisherman use there.

In winter, you can catch lots of pilch on the reef and in the channel.

Whiting are good in summer - cast directly onto reef (even if only a foot deep) and don’t wind, as you will get snagged - they will bite if there.

Have found night fishing produces bigger fish, but less of them.

On a calm day you can walk

Fri, 2017-10-27 18:00

On a calm day you can walk to pretty much any of

the edges. You need a low tide AND low swell. The place to walk out from is just above your pin in the second image. Be prepared to get everything you carry and wear wet. Most try to fish the hole to the left of your circle, but everywhere works.

I've also heard the Blue Hole was blown up after claiming nuns as well as several race horses. Thought it was an urban myth

No! No! No! Don't put on

Fri, 2017-10-27 19:38

No! No! No! Don't put on your waders!! Stupidest bit of advice. On the left of the Blue Hole is where the kids surf. They dont surf where it's flat so if you want to fish there wear wetsuit. It only takes one wave to fill your wader and guaranteed you wont rise again. A brother in law of a good friend went crabbing in Mandurah estuary where there are no real waves but he must have stepped into a hole. He died that night. The tripod fishermen wear waders but majority of the time they are higher than the waves. Only time you can wear waders out there is when it's flat calm and then there's no point as there's no fish. You may see others wearing waders but they are ultra careful and they risk their own lives. If you want to do that and take the risks so be it, but please dont give advice that risk other peoples lives.

 Yeah the “blue hole” is

Fri, 2017-10-27 21:13

Yeah the “blue hole” is where you have circled in the 2nd image, it fills with sand and is usually shallow in summer but in winter gets dug out by swell and is more prominent, great tailor spot

Old thoughts there

Fri, 2017-10-27 22:03

I use to fish there very early 70 s when there was a beach and rocks were exposed and the the concrete BBQ rock nthe beach before the sand came in , also the rocks and cliffs exposed from the original island which had a cave ,  you could not walk from the island to trigg isl cafe or surf club due to the cliffs.

then I bought a tripod , rose wood alvey and got out amongst the big tailor , salmon and occasional mulloway , bait casting mulies at all hours

got caught e few times by the swell , no thanks to your mates saying it's safe to move ,   Black rubber waders and Taft jackets filling up with water

after many years of great times with mates  and hanging out with Ron Johnston who lived in a house next to park where we use to leave our tripods  because my beach buggy could not carry it and rods .

then I bought my first boat at 18 ,  a stacer  c c 4.7 mt with 35 hp Jono and launched on the island boat ramp and ran out through the reef to the three mile reefs ,

caugh some great tailor and salmon , but always enjoyed getting back to the blue hole and tripoding ,

very different section of reef now , even the surfing scene is low to what it was back then.

never took any pictures of the fish we caught a shot it was always was easy to catch your quota then.

blue hole

Sat, 2017-10-28 10:18

is left of the red circle, second piture is what I remember to be the bluehole, the gap in the reef on the ocean side used to be a solid reef.Sand over the years has filled in but years ago it used to suck out under the area and be very dangerours, area was a lot deeper back then early 70"s.

Might be 2 blue holes

Sat, 2017-10-28 12:19

Check out tripod fishing on u tube perth.this guy is clearing facing west.most of the tripoders faced west.casting into the hole that had a reef on the outer ledge. When ever Cuey or Rowingboat talked about the blue hole this is what they talked about. You might not want to fish there after watching this ha ha.

 My understanding is Trigg

Sat, 2017-10-28 16:22

My understanding is Trigg Blue Hole actually consists of two seperate holes. There is the inner hole (at the pin drop) between the two sections of onshore reef & the outer hole which is the area to the SW of the bottle neck between the reefs. The tripod guys I've seen usually set up around the top left of the circled area. The inner hole gets filled with sand through summer & scoured clean through winter. When the inner hole is scoured clean it's got a significant undertow that can be dangerous if your not a strong swimmer & you go in. When it's calm there are a few reef edges in the area you can walk if you go exploring but generally conditions calm enough to walk the reefs safely are crap times to fish. Tarwine, whiting & herring are the most common catches on small baits. There are heaps of almost size cobbler over the reefs at night. Tailor are best chased with lures in the area IME with metals & surface presentations being most suitable. If the tide is right up a mulie cast from the island & floated over the reef can be deadly.
