gday all going to head over to rotto hopefully a few times this week...is it worth throwing a few lures out trolling around on the way out/in? or just hammer out there and bottom bash as i have planned? are the salmon around? good light line fun?

i wouldnt bother trolling
i wouldnt bother trolling between mainland and rotto, not saying you couldnt get anything but if you were going to put the time in i would do it around west end. the salmon have thinned out but there would still be some around and possibly mackerel too. apart from that just keep your eyes peeled for birds working or fish busting up.

trolling on the way to rotto
trolling on the way to rotto would waste a lot of time out there. do some trolling once you get there by all means as you never know whats out there, but keep a line ready to throw in just in case you see a flock of birds diving as usually it means tuna or the likes

where
Where are you going from? If you are going from Hillaries its worth going a few extra kms south of the turning marker and putting a few lures out, the 3 mile can turn up some suprising captures. After that though its very hit n miss.

trolling to rotto
I do it every time i head over...
But thats only because the father-in-laws 50 year old (ex shark boat... jarrah Carvell planked) 40 footer does less than 8 knots all the way there, and its a long slow trip...
only ever caught the odd snook / pike ....
probably wouldnt bother if your able to shoot straight over at any reasonable sort of speed...

East Fremantle
You can either launch at East Fremantle ramp opposite the Leuwin Barracks (just up from the Left Bank Pub) and then head out the river mouth straight over to Rotto or alternatively launch at Woodman point. I prefer Leuwin Ramp but thats because I live 1 min away from it. Parking is a biatch though - about $12 for the day.

I also live a min from lewin
I also live a min from lewin and we get someone to drive the car and trailer back home and then pick them up at east street. Either that or get someone not going out to be our driver, much easier and also means we dont have to wait at the ramp. But regarding trolling to rotto i wouldnt bother, i recon the trolling is better on the south side and we normally start when were about half way past the island, but if theres a stiff southerly we usually go the north side.
