This year there were 400 000 trout fry, 29000 yearlings and 2700 ex brood trout released into WA public waters. The ex brood fish are the only ones currently that would be of legal size. Harvey Dam received the bulk of these as usual with 1900 Rainbows and 300 Browns, 300 went into Drakesbrook Weir and Big Brook Dam got the last 200.
No worries guys, dont want to go wasting your time fishing at places like Waroona and Logues when no brood fish have been put in there. No fish whatsoever went into Wellington Dam despite the state govts promise to make it into a "Recreational Fishing Hub". http://www.wa.liberal.org.au/sites/www.wa.liberal.org.au/files/plans/Fisheries.pdf
I think. The brood stock are obviously reared in Tanks. When you fish for released trout at karri valley resort all you have success with is "corn kernels". I flicked lures and SP around but after the "lazy" Mrs had about 5 trout landed to my zip changed over to this.
So is this also the case with brood stock released into the dams or do they quickly learn to chase natural (or artificial) targets. Just wondering as I am no expert on trout.
Last yrs stockings were pretty low though Crasny as the hatchery lost 75% of their fingerlings/yearlings in the summer of 2012/2013. Still there will be a few around especially in the rivers, I fished harvey quite a few times in the autumn and failed to find a single trout so I dont know where they all dissappear to. There were plenty of Reddies about though which are much better eating its just a pitty they dont fight.
with my boys this Monday, give it a go.concrete trout or wild don't care should be fun...Harvey,fly, lure, bait corn, prawns and even the good old blue bait.1 off my biggest wild trout in logues years ago was a running sinker and a whole blue bait.there much the same as any fish.all can be caught, just the location you choose to fish..very much looking forward to it,
Was a good opening to the season at Harvey Dam today, everyone I spoke to got fish with a good even mix of Rainbows, Redfin and Browns. I recon there would have been around 20 - 30 boats and a similar number of canoes/kayaks on the water and a fair few fishing from the shore to. I spotted the Fisheries Dept Ute there too so make sure you have your licence before heading down.
