I've heard about line slip, but never had the problem myself. I put a layer of electrical tape under my last lot of spools just in case. It can't hurt.
I only have braid on breaming reels but I use mono backing, using tape, then an FG knot because they are the best tying the braid and mono together, then off you go and spool!
Some shimano reels now come with the transparent tape to tie braid straight to the spool. My Complex ci4+ & Exsence Ci4+ both comes with tapes in the box.
Otherwise, like others have said, short length of mono than braid. Doesn't matter what knot you use to join the mono to braid, because the purpose is to prevent slippage. If a fish can spool you to the last few rounds of line on your reel arbor, I doubt FG/ PR or whatever knot is going to stop it. Besides, in my opinion if a fish can empty my spool at reasonable drag, it deserves to live. :)
Agree, but if ypu have a bulky knot it can screw your guides up if going out at high speed which means instead of having to replace the line you also need to replace guides, etc.
Never heard or seen that. Bulky knots in windons causes friction and thus a knot like FG etc are more streamlined, but if casting isnt an issue a back to back UNI will certainly do. When I cant be bothered with braid to leader windon do a Bimini in braid, then back to back UNI with double on Braid. Thus for a backing it never bothers what you use.
I use an FG know to tie braid to fluoro which is pretty much the same thing as backing to braid, and I find that the line usually brakes before the knot, and that when I cast 4g lures, the FG not goes straight through the micro guides of a 2-4KG rod like it is normal line
I have seen braid slippage first hand from a spool on various occasions. One was a stella I spooled up for a customer who didn't want any mono or tape. On my reels I use a length of mono so I know when i'm coming up to end of the spool and can choose to bust off or run into danger zone.
