undersize crabs

im absolutely sick to death of certain minorities down at claremont jetty taking undersized and berried crabs. i can see the jetty from my bedroom and im always down there and its the same old story. ive called fishwatch many times to see nothing happen. ive gone to the point of about to snap. ive grabbed there buckets before and thrown it all back. there should be something in our power we can do to get them fined but there is nothing.

That would make my blood boil seeing that every day, but you are right, it happens all the time.

Not much you can do except ring fisheries or take it into your own hands....

Fisheries really dont do

Thu, 2011-12-22 11:10

Fisheries really dont do anything when you call them?

Thats pretty disappointing

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Impersonate.

Thu, 2011-12-22 11:20

Is it illegal to impersonate a fisheries officer? I'm thinking it is but if not maybe go online and search for a fisheries shirt or get one made up similar.

Wear it down to the jetty with some slacks (or stubbies) and watch them scramble to release their illegal catch.

If that's illegal then yeah not a whole lot you can do. Once in busso I saw a bloke keeping undersize crabs and I just let them know fisheries was over there (they weren't) and he through them back. Worked on that occasion but probably quite rare.

Cheers

Find out what they are

Thu, 2011-12-22 11:34

Find out what they are driving and let their tyres down - Karma's a Biatch!

Don't forget to get their plate numbers while you're there and report them to Fisheries.  They might be able to follow it up after if they can't ever get there during?

That's true, most of the time license plate info is what the fisheries  ask for.

PUBLIC AWARENESS, that's all

Thu, 2011-12-22 13:11

PUBLIC AWARENESS, that's all you need....just as in any other places you go...down south or up north, you can see a board of notices at fishing locations to inform of species and legal size...why can't they have it installed around Perth??? Then these offenders will not have excuses....

public education

Thu, 2011-12-22 16:42

I totally agree with the public awareness bit ,fisheries spend a lot of rescorces on public awareness up north but you see very little down in Perth about taking under size fish etc.Down at the cut there is not much in the way of signage about the taking of undersize fish or crustations and there arew large amounts of these taken by a great cross section of our society. When you confront people over it the oldies 60+ generaly say things like "I'm only taking a couple it wont made any differance to the stocks". Then you get the 50ish types saying" show me where it says that". Then you get the younger members of society saying things like" I can't see your badge that says I have to take any notice of anything youi say" And of course there are people who say "Ididn't know" Bring on land based fishing licences I say along with the education proccesses in order to get a licence, along with good sized notice boards at prominant fishing spots generaly outline size and capture limits in english. If you can't read english in some minor cases how come the person can get in their car and drive away presumably with a current drivers licence. I live in Falcon aznd the number of people from all walks of life that catch a bucket of crabs, bring them to the foreshore tip them out find out that none are of legal size leave them on the foreshore and walk away complaining about the lack of good size crabs being available leaves me speachless. In the case of the crabs there are good size signs saying about what you can use to catch them and what the legal size is,why not the same for fish.

i went for a walk the other night and visited the jetty, not many crabs being caught...

but it would really annoy me to see people really keeping undersize or crabs with eggs

i've gone up to people in the past and hassled them, and that does seem to have an effect

i've also found taking pics of them and the crabs works , and definately record their rego numbers if you can

i have seen fisheries on the river, but not often

i think the fisheries need a system like i think its the keep australia beautiful people where as theres a certain number of people who can dob people in for littering or throwing a smoke out the window with out having to actually prove it...it wouldnt be hard to give some people after a quick back ground check and a bit of training the power to actually enforce it...i know id volunteringly do it.

Thu, 2011-12-22 22:15

Is it a call center (from India) when you call fisheries/fishwatch or is it an office in Perth.  Why not ask for the persons name that you have spoken to.  Then like that if people do not attend and you are incensed again then you can call during office hours and ask to speak to someone with the call details.  Might work.

Yes its frustrating, good on you for re-educating people on correct crab sizes.

Im not a civil libber but...

Look back on this forum alone and see how often people post half-cocked and it turns out to be F-all, such as the "double dipping" thread a while back and those sorts of things.

To give someone the power to charge and punish anyone with committing a crime without any recourse is so wrong in our system. Even the cops dont have that power, except with on-the-spot-fines. How often have they got it wrong also?

We all hate to see people blatantly breaking the rules-but far worse would be to discover that the bloke who thought we may have "pinged" him was one of the Fisheries secret police and thought he'd be in charge of karma.

"I witnessed him pulling craypots".

In Australia, even more important than justice being done, is that its SEEN to be done-firmly, FAIRLY and with checks and balances in place.

Otherwise you may as well live in Indonesia, Pakistan or Afghanistan.

Id suggest maybe that you call the West Australian and tell them that Fisheries havent responded to any of your calls and give them dates and times.

Maybe they will follow it up if its a slow news week!
