Unusual capture or no?
Caught one of these guys fishing for herring off woodman point. after about half an hour searching through the species id guide i belive its a senator wrasse, is this and unsusual capture for the area or they pretty common around? was only a little guy bout 25cm so he went back ok after this quick photo. otherwise ok trip, managed to land 3 herring between 21 and 26cm and hooked a few more but all managed to throw the hooks doing spins and jumps, which i was never able to witness presviously having only caught them off the beach. a bit more respect for the humble herring after today, bit more of a challenge off the rocks than i expected, despite the massive amount of them in the water around the berley had a hard time landing them. so at the very least it was a great learning experience with different rigs and styles and some herring fillets that im having a go at pickling.

Common
I can't see your picture, but from a diver's point of view senator wrasse are about as common as a fish gets in the south west. Probably don't get heaps bigger than 25cm either.

Either
Could either be a brown spot or senator wrasse.. Very common almost more so then herring.. There is definately worse fish on the chew also if you can't get a feed of something else

Don't know about them being a good chew myself, had a taste test of around 8 different fish last week - the wrasse was the only one more than one of us spat out straight away, soapy mush taste about sums it up for me......

Oh ok fair enuf, never seen 1 before just thort id find out, read posts of them further out boat fishing. Probly better for alternative types of cooking I guess like curries etc? Did consider using it as bait as the herring didnt seem interested in the squid I had, but very skeptical to keep if I dont know what it is, size limits etc. Cheers guys

haha good on ya for throwing
haha good on ya for throwing it back, hate seeing "id please?" and a picture of a dead fish. Try a small twisty (5 or 10 gram) if the herring aren't going for bait, simple fast retrieve usually gets them fired up. And yeh, they're pretty damn good at throwing the hooks!

haha yeh seen a bit of that, ive only just gotten into fishing i want there to be big fish around for a lot longer yet. yeh ive heard that works and i did have a few i almost tied on, but 1st i rerigged with the green straw over hook rig bout 1m behind a blob to try that. works really well so i played with that for a bit before running out of berley and they just seemed to disappear shortly after that. just wish id tried it alot sooner! have to try the twisties next time i rekon

Used to catch heaps of those
Used to catch heaps of those off the south mole. Not good eating, do not recommend keeping it for bait either
