Urgent advice needed - Marine mechanics in Denham or nearby

Hi,

I have a mate up at Tamala Station at the moment that has just started a two week holiday up there. He towed his boat up and has not been able to start it since arriving (the battery is fine, it simply will not crank and the tilt will not work). Does anyone on here know of any marine mechanics in Denham or nearby? He wants to tow it to one on Monday, but I can't find any details on boat servicing or marine mechanics in Denham, the closest I can find is Geraldton......

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Matt

Can't offer any help with a contact,  but I would think any auto sparky or mechanic should be able to fault find it. Doesn't sound life is a specific boat problem.  I would be looking over the key switch and connectors/wires and checking the main fuses.

With a multimeter start at the battery and work your way along the system step by step.

One of our mates on our last trip there had problems with his starter solinoid on day2. Thankfully for him a few of us knew our way around a boat and knocked up a jumper cable to get him running again. The Caltex on the Main Street in Denham had quite the stock of spare parts and exactly the replacement my mate needed. 3 times the price of Perth but I can't imagine he moves high volumes and he has a capture audience.

Might be worth dropping a PM to fishwrecked.com/users/carnarvonite , I'm pretty sure he's living there now from the other thread and may be able to point you to the right local...

Don't know any mechanics in Denham but your mate's problem sounds very similar to a problem I have (twice) a few years ago (115 ETEC).

Same symptons as you describe was caused by a faulty 'start in gear' cut out swicth in the control box - if it is the same problem, you will need parts for the fix.  Not expensive or hard to do, just need the part.

Cheers for the advice guys. This guy's dad is a sparky by trade and he has gone over the entire boat without any luck so I think it will require someone with some sort of marine background. From what he tells me the motor has power, but won't crank or tilt. I will PM carnarvonite.

Check your voltage under load by testing while trying to start it or pushing the trim button.

If his dad is a sparky and has gone over the entire boat, he should be able to see where the power gets to.
Sounds a bit like an earth issue, but without even knowing what sort of outboard it is (1977 Evinrude 25 or 2017 300 Suzuki) it is hard to give any direct advice.

Start in gear protection wouldnt stop the tilt/trim, but sparky worth his salt should be able to narrow it down as it is very likely something simple thatll make you feel foolish once found!
On some motors the dead man switch will stop everything from working, thats one of the very first things Id be checking...

Motor is a late 90's Merc 50hp 2-stroke. The motor itself is getting power from what I am told. The deadman seems too obvious, but will definitely pass that on.

Haha, I keep putting up here when people are fault finding-check the simple, cheap and obvious stuff first!

And check it properly, people have been towed in to find the deadman wasn't clipped in!

Not only that the dead man is clipped in, but that there isn't a broke wire from towing on a rough track into Tamara.

Your sparky bloke should be able to do that easily on an older motor.

Just think how foolish you'd feel after towing it to Denham!

Those older engines don't too have many mysteries unlike the newer ECU,s

Hey mate hope you get it sorted soon. I had the same problem on my 2005 200 merc and in the end it was a blown fuse in the outboard I took me days of searching to find the problem and that was it in the end

good luck

If its that old Id be looking at the bullet connectors in the controller and in the control cable.  One getting water in them can cause that problem. Even if they look ok they need to be pulled apart inspected and cleaned. They can rot off even if they look ok and you wont know till you phisically inspect them. There may be bullet connectors hiding in the control cable also between the motor and controller. Also inspect the cable as it may have a nick in it somewhere and has got water in it and rotten inside.
