vhf handheld vs fixed

Hi , i'm looking to invest in a vhf radio , and would prefer a hand held as it would give more usable options. What would the range be on a handheld compared to a in built unit ?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Pretty decent difference. I have a fixed and a hand held that lives in my ditch bag. The hand held gets used far more than I would ever like to admit to.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Big difference, handheld may
Big difference, handheld may be 5Watt for a good unit, fixed 25 watt and much higher aerial.
Line of sight may be ok to a repeater, but NEVER will be anywhere near a fixed unit

Fixed for me mate. Higher
Fixed for me mate. Higher aerial and better range makes it a no brainer.
There's no RAC out wide!
