Submitted by petermac on Thu, 2018-12-13 17:50
two excavators operatrating and a couple of trucks are running back and forth on turn island which i always thought was a bird sanctuary area , i asked 1 of the supervisors "have you got a marine oil spill emergancy kit " " nah whats 1 of them " , well we just have to see what happens when one of the excivators bursts a hydralic hose into the water , or a truck spills its guts on the sand , it will be a case of" so sorry they should have had a spill emergency kit " and i say this having done the full on spill response couse in dampier years ago

i think the cost of fines
i think the cost of fines and clean up would be a whole lot more than the clean up kit.
they could cop fines even if one of the vehicles has an oil leak and drips onto the sand if someone was having a bad day

Was it a sarcastic response
Was it a sarcastic response ?
Would hope that a “marine oil spill emergency kit” is pretty self explanatory to most - so to respond with “nah what’s one of them?” comes across as a bit of sarcasm to me. Would also hope the council and contractor would complete environmental assessments and permits.
In saying that this ongoing debarcle of trying to fight that sandbar doesn’t seem overly clever does it!

When the dredging was done
When the dredging was done last time they had diesal leaking from their sea container modified to hold diesal and pump. I contacted the city and alerted them city response was they have emergency procedures, i watched them a couple of days later throw sand over the affected area. Several days later they were transporting a 1000 litres of diesal in a container on a dingy and lost it half way across luckily no major spill. So all that said don,t expect any oversight from the city on this.

City completed water quality
City completed water quality testing in the pond area after local kite surfer got staph infection, they found salmonella in the water. Repeat test 10 days later all clear. So 1 for 1 against what do you believe? Still trying to understand why city didn,t issue warnings as this is popular spot for toddlers.

Temperory fix, not overly
Temperory fix, not overly deep from the excavator but alot better then it was. To their credit they got it done very quick, just over two weeks I think?
See how long it takes to grow again, weed bank on eastern side of markers very shallow, will not be long and that'll be a island itself
