Submitted by grayzeee on Sat, 2011-02-12 09:59
just looking at replacing our old canon digi camera with one of the new waterproof models so as to get some underwater shots on the boat.
had a quick look at the panasonic lumix TS1 which looks the goods.
does anyone have any feedback on them or are there any other models that may be worth checking out??
cheers.

Im looking as well mate. Ive researched the brands, olympus, pentax etc and Ive got it narrowed to the panasonic lumix TS1 or canon D10.
The Panasonic is $250 odd and the canon $500. Im just waiting to see if canon is releasing a new model in the next month or so the D10 goes on clearance.
If not the Panasonic will be the one I get.

we have 2 of the olympus and
we have 2 of the olympus and cant fault them.
whichever way you go , make sure you follow the instructions with them carefully. i know the olympus says to soak the camera in fresh water for 10 minutes after being in salt water which i presume would be the same with all others

Check the wide angle zoom
I use a Canon G7 in a waterproof housing, but some of the shots I want I cant do as the 35mm equivalent wide angle is not enough on my boat sometimes. So I'd suggest you check how wide you will think you'd need to zoom & make a decision from there. I'd also check on shutter lag as most point and shoots have a bit of a lag once you press the shutter before the shot is taken. This can be a pain when taking photos of action, or when trying to balance a horizon in a boat.

I have a d10 and it takes
I have a d10 and it takes some great pictures. Probably the only bad thing about it is that it doesnt have HD video. As far as I know, there are no immediate plans for a new model.
Btw, the FT3/TS3 should be out very soon. Has gps and barometer/altimeter too which is interesting, as well as full HD video. So worth waiting for that to come out if you're going the lumix, either for the FT3 or clearance FT2's.
