We finally got out there
Well after 4 months without hitting the salty substance in our boat due to repairs being carried out which is now home where she belongs (apart from on the water).
We made the decision to hit the water around 6:30 am but as usual we were running late, finally left the jetty at around 7:45 (gentlemans hours) and we were greeted with some nice flat waters with a slight Easterly wind blowing but due to lack of time and petrol funds we had decided to fish in shallower waters than we would normally fish. We got to our spot with plenty of fish showing on the sounder with some nice lumpy ground under them, setting up for the drift to work out which way we would go and seeing even more nice ground all around showing fish we thought it might be a great day. The drift produce absolutely nothing , so we decided to anchor up. First fish that came aboard was a small and i say smalllllll b/bum by Sandy. Followed by Brenden (who slept most of the day) pulled in another small b/bum , followed by a half decent wrasse (bait) .My first fish was a decent skippy of around 1/2 kg . A few other skippy of reasonable size came aboard when finally Sandy was into something decent which ended up as a nice big fat KG that went 51cm and just over 1kg.
I then cut up the wrasse to use for bait on a set of bigger hooks. A few more skippy came up with some of them being returned as we already had some good size ones in the esky. Sandy's rod buckled over with line screaming off in a hurry, after a few minutes the fight was going her way . Up came a Sambo of around the 6kg mark , nice feed comming up for us i said. Spiked , bled and into the esky.
Things went quiet so we decided to up anchor and move to another spot. I came up with a double header, small skippy and a gurnard both went back swimming. Then Sandys rod went off screaming again . This time the fight was a bit different from the last but after several minutes up came another sambo of similar size to the first and again spike, bled and in the esky.
After a while with some little nibbles and not much action Sandy was bringing her line up and it was heavy, thinking maybe an occy or a cuttlefish up comes a cuttlie of a decent size, yum , tasty entree . Lines down again and this time Sandy felt something a bit different in the fight and up comes an eel of around 70 cm(damn things) but we managed to avoid the usual line tangle by leaving it in the water to remove the hooks.
Next one on was me , it was quite heavy and some good pulls i wasnt sure what to call , then finally up comes a huge cuttlie. Things went all quiet after that apart from a few skippy so we decided to head on in. With Brenden waking up he drove us in at 30knts all the way as the water was as calm as.
Back at the boat ramp by 1:45 with a reasonable catch for the day on some new ground. Sandy ended with 1 kg, 2 sambo , 1 cuttlie and 3 skippy. I ended with 5 skippy and 1 cuttlie so i was out done yet again.

About Time
Every time I open the site you are congrats somebody else but had never seen a post of your catches.
Good to see you are in the water and having success on the first voyage after beginning grounded.
Not bad for a quick trip out, often good to stay close to shore after mechanical problems just gives you that extra bit of piece in the back of your mind
Well done, look forward to more posts

Good report!
Great to see you got back onto the water, Russ...and it also shows that you can still get a good feed even with all the new bag limits! Again, nice write-up/photos and looking forward to hearing about your next adventure.
Why didn't we have weather like that for Whitey's charter last week? Always the way!

thanks for all the kind words and it was so enjoyable out there but we did have one big problem with the day, we had to come back in and go and open the shop
. would have been nice to stay out longer.
Jeff, we have tried cuttlie for bait before and nothing wanted to touch it, two baits down there and only the cuttlie would come back up

yeh russ, it didnt get shitty till we got right out in the 60's, thats fishen eh..
just eating some of the sambo now, its not that bad, nice and firm, but the nanagi is far better than all, including the spanish mac.
i will have to try the cuttle next time instead of using it as bait.
cheers ron

yeah seems to be quite a few cuttlies around at the moment. the smaller one of ours was full of eggs so i would say its spawning season and brings the big ones to shallower waters
