I spent Easter in South Africa at Shelly Beach watching the guys launch and retrieve their boats. Really appreciate our boat ramps.
See footage below.

Not a bad vid of beach
Not a bad vid of beach launching / retrieving and a good watch.
Obviously in the rougher conditions the cats are the go !!
One or two mono's but most were cats and the people in mono's probably wished they were in the cats anyway hahahah
My fishing spots are so secret........... even the fish don't know where they are !!

Two motors
You'll see that all the boats have two motors - you don't want your only motor failing you in the surf. Also gives the boats that bit extra to punch through the waves.

Roll Bars
Notice also the "Roll Bars" over the motors to give them some protection in case of flipping in the surf zone.

Gel Coat
Any gel coat left on the hulls off the boats? Surely beach sand gotta tear them to shreds.

Steel strip
Most of the boats have a replacable steel strip at the bottom of the hull.

At first viewing I thought these people are mad
Then, after looking at the video a couple of times I came to the conclusion these people aren't mad, they are very skilled and organised group of fishermen/women who go about their sport and boat handling in a very skilled manner.
It would be awesome to sit and watch them launch and retrieve on a day when there is a bit of a sea running.
Me, I'll stick to the ramps thank you.

Close calls and disasters
Conditions look good in the videos Ed posted. Here is a close call at the same venue in fairly benign conditions

Sometimes the shore dump and high frequency sets can make life difficult. Have a look at these large lads getting out for a fish.

I guess they learnt why to
I guess they learnt why to not go side on to a breaking wave. One hull digs in to water going out, top water hits one hull going in and flippity

I reckon they are mad, why
I reckon they are mad, why the hell would you launch in swells like that (refering to the vids) What the fishing like out there Eddy? Must be good to take those risks even on a good day.

Mostly inland fishing
I went down to the boat ramp every day for five days and apart from two decent couta, did not see any noteworthy fish. I believe this area has been fished hard over the years and unfortunatly the waters are not nearly as well regulated as ours here in Aus. Whilst living in South Africa I spent most of my time fishing inland light-tackle-boat on the many lakes as I lived 700km from the coast and seldom got on the ocean. Really only learnt the art of salt water angling since being in Australia.
On a lighter note - every time I did go out to sea in SA (about 5 times) I got seasick. I have had over 50 launches in Aus and am yet to get seasick - the mind boggles?

A variety of species
I am not sure what Ed's stomping ground in South Africa was. Here is my brief synopsis.
There are a great variety of demersal species off the east coast. Of the 100 odd species of Sparidae (Seabream)worldwide at least 40 0ccur in the so called "Mozambique current" which runs along the east coast. These include Red Emperor and Tarwhine. One of these species called the Red Steenbrass gets to over 50kg.
The waters hold a large variety of "Seabass" (Serranedae)of which the Rankin is a member (but not found there)The "Yellowbelly" and "Captain Fine" members of the species are esteemed table fish and have a similar texture to the Rankin.
In general the waters hold many of the species we get here. Taylor, Mulloway and the pelagics - Spanish Macks , Dorado, Yellowfin etc.
Of course the metro area have been bombed but the more remote locations which require a surf launch still hold plenty of fish.
Surf launching is a way of life and if you are sensible and the risks aren't too great.

Good reply Joe, cheers for
Good reply Joe, cheers for that. I surf launch my boat 95% of the time about an hour up the coast, we are very careful about how it's down and it comes down to swell height for us. It could be a glass off day with a 2+m swell and we won't go. Launching is deffo the dangerous part, beaching we do the same just hammer for the shore leg slightly tilted, jump off and hold onto the arse end. Always cop a few over the back but we have a winch house to pull the boats out.
