Wednesday 11 Nov Jigging on Tony's boat
My first little sambo, just to give my reel a test-drive. It really did very well, even if this isn;t much of a test!
This one tried a lot harder!
A little Sambo on a Caprice jig - ta Kasey!
The Daiwa Saltist Lever Drag 30 2-speed was good. I really need to back it off because 300m of YGK Ultra Jigman 8x PE4 doesn't go anwhere to fill it and the spool was very small and took a lot of winding. Took a bit of work to match the 6:1 gear ratio to the stroke length, but once that was sorted it was all good.
Not too many casualties for the day. I had a GT knot snap at the base of the wraps, losing quite a good fish and a cheap jig. Tony lost a horse right up when we had colour. J_D had one bottom hookup and the knot I used broke at the bimni, perhaps I could use some practise there.
I have to run along to cook dinner, fresh sambo fishcakes with garlic chives and coriander. The rest released well.
Check out J_D's horse below though!

Getting excited
Nice boys, much much bigger fish than about 3 or 4 weeks ago when i was there!
Looking good!!
J_D's/Tony's (vertical pic) biggun looks oh so close to an amber (looked twice) from its faint yellow lateral line but i'll stick with a sambo!
How dense were the school/s Jamie?
Cheers,
Sam

I think people are missing the bigger picture!
Congrats Tony on the Movemeber mo, that thing is a cracker so early in the month. 2 more weeks and that thing will be nearing Boonie like legendary status.
Yeah yipee - sambos, but that mo is the real deal.

We saw you guys on some ok fish at the shallower sites, we found the bigger fish deeper.
Good to hear there are some tuna around, it will be fun when they stack on a few pounds.

Our littlies had the same
Our littlies had the same number of scutes(?) is it on the top dorsal fin as the biguns, either they were all sambos or ambos and I thought the brow was a bit heavy for ambos.
The fish cakes were ok, whatever it was =)

Nice work guys. Good to see
Nice work guys. Good to see some bigger ones landed (and to see Tony jig one up a bit bigger than the smaller ones last time).
Look like sambos to me. In Tony's vertical one, the head doesnt look rounded/streamlined enough for an amber.

Nice work Till
Itching to get out there but got to man a booth at the 4wd show this weekend. If we get a nice day next week I'm heading out ...you and Matt (Hlokk) will be welcome. I was told not to eat the Sammies because of worms but sounds like the little ones are ok. Cheers, Ben

Just found a little info bout the differences between the two
A quick ID is to check the relative position of the leading edge of the eye in relation to the rear of the jaw hinge.
In sambos the eye is behind the jaw hinge and amberjacks it is in front.
Put the 2 fish together and there is no mistaking the difference.
Amberjacks also are a scalyier fish than sambos - the scale being clearly seen where sambos have tiny scales, generally more streamlined and pull harder.
Dorsal fin ray count's definitely the reliable way to tell - samsons are always in the low 20s, amberjacks are in the low 30s. Enough difference with those numbers that you don't have to be too exact with the counting. You have samsons!

Ahh fin rays, thats why they
Ahh fin rays, thats why they are call. Yeah the ones we got only got to about 18 before they flared back up which was too few for amberjacks.

Fair enough look a lot
Fair enough look a lot different at that size when they come out of that depth. We chase them in about seventeen metres and they take on a totally different look at a simillar size. The mullas from that depth are also alot more cleaner looking than say the sound or river.

They do seem to come out in
They do seem to come out in different colours like you say, but really I've always thought amberjacks fight as hard as sambos, perhaps even harder.
I saw a couple give Simo a fair workout last year, perhaps he was just soft ;)
Can't comment, haven't caught one myself yet.
