Wednesday 13th - the deep and the FADS

Managed to hook up with Colt_Striker (Jason) yesterday.  The weather was fine and we were hoping for a good session out in the deep.

Headed out to target some red snapper / bight red fish in 180m, spotted some birds on the way out so did a quick troll around them and picked up a couple of stripeys before continuing on.  When we pulled up at the spot we both dropped our lines down, Jase was on the electric and I went manual.  He lost his bait on the first drop, I got a triple header - 2 x reds and a big breaksea.  With only one more fish available before we bagged out on the demersals I left the job to Jay who picked up a pinkie on his next drop.  So twenty minutes after pulling up there we had our limit.

Time to head to the southern FAD, trolled all the way there for nothing but got excited when we pulled up as there were dollies everywhere.  You could see them bubbling on the surface and swimming under the boat, then to top the excitement off we saw a stickface break the surface twice chasing some pup dollies.  Well the excitement ended pretty quickly, no matter what we and the two other boats out there (Honsu were you out there yesterday?) threw at these fish we couldn't get any interest - surface lures, divers, softies, jigs, bait the works.  After 1.5hrs of trying we gave up in frustration, did a couple of laps towing some skirts but nothing happened.

Stopped off at the 40s on the way back to Mangles Bay but nothing was playing the game there either so we called it a day and headed back to the ramp.

It was a hell day on the water, calm as, some good fish to start with and it's always cool to meet a new FW member.  It just didn't finish as well as it started.  That's fishing.

Few pics below to help show the story...

Wouldn't be too many pics of free jumping billies taken at the trench.

Pity the dollies were switched off.

Sounds like a enjoyable day out. Few nice table fish. That Billie looks a reasonable size. Must have got the heart pumping when ya saw that free jumping.

Jase spotted the first jump, I missed it but just happened to have the camera in the right spot when he jumped the next time (the second photo above is just a cropped version of the one before it).  It was definately a highlight.

Hey lads....we were out there

Fri, 2013-02-15 09:26

Hey lads....we were out there to, the most southenr fad, If you were there early morning, we had left around 830 9am to go to the trench... We boated 11 dollies then headed offshore....check my report.  We got ours on baits, skirts and a certain very small stickbait. The bigger fish seemed to want the skirts the most.

We were the boat with the black hull......named the black pearl.

Yeah I saw that Terboz, jealous mate!

We got there around 12.30pm so my guess was that we were there too late in the day and the fish were over having lures pinged at them.

Great day out in the water ... well done Ben and Jason.

A tip someone told me before, out in the Deep Fishing, try to limit your rigs to 1 or 2 hooks max ... for the same exact reason; bag out quickly, and quite hard to release fish back to that sort of depth. Plus, you leave room in your bag limit to may be move on to the next spot, and try what's biting there.

Quality photos too

Great Day out on FADs

Sun, 2013-02-17 14:29

Hey Ben,

Would you have a closer shot of that marlin jumping as it looks like my boat in the background and would love to show it off to the guys at work. (didn't see the jump when we wer out there.)

My Boat was the Quintrex 510 Coastrunner (DM306) were there from about 9am to 12 noon.

We got only one Dollie when we moved from the All Marine Services FAD to the FSC FAD but did get at least 6 hook ups with no result due to the hook either been thrown or bitten off. I only suceeded when I changed up to a 6-8kg rod from a 3-6kg to get the hook to set properly. (light gear is fun though)

We were using 7" Jerk Shads in various pink colours with 1/2 oz 3/0 TT Jigheads, but you also need to have just the right lure action for them to strike as they can be very temperamental at times.

Awesome Photo and Awesome perfect day.
