OUT WIDE

Fri, 2006-06-16 09:51

Well I will be heading out wide ( real wide) , after losing site of Rotto travel another hour and you will be where we are going , looking for Hapuka's , grey banded's and big Amberjacks , wouldn't mind some more Blackspot pigfish either they are good on the tooth I can tell ya .

We are thinking of taking a couple of hunderd kilo's of burley out and sitting off Rotto on a lump in around 40 m and see what we can burley up one night , now that would be FUN.

I'll report back if we catch something .

Weekend

Fri, 2006-06-16 11:13

Headed out tomorrow, if the conditions are good, containers, if they are average, sit in close and wait it out. Skipper got a nice 5kg dhuie in 15m of water down on the 3 mile yest, along with pike and a 60cm sambo fishing by himself. Plenty of fish inclose if the winds blowing, so will make that decision in the morning. Having a heap of internet troubles here at the moment, so will post up some pictures soon.

Hope you all have a good weekend, tight lines!!!

back home! Saw adam and crew

Sat, 2006-06-17 16:51

back home!

Saw adam and crew at hillarys ramp this morning, we headed out around scarborough but only managed a few small reef fish in the first hour or so then headed out to the NE side of rotto. Landed a dhuie just over legal and a thumper KG that was just on 55cm. Fish the North side of rotto for a while to get nothing expect one blistering run with head shakes and ended up biting me off, felt like mr bitey. Tried a few other spots on the NW side of rotto but the fish wouldnt play ball! Was hard to hold bottom the drift was insane under the boat. Feuled up at rotto and had a late lunch the came back in the choppy sou-westerly(i think, it changed so much that day!)

Long hard day , not many fish but hey, beats working.

Yeah we saw Adam and his motley crew out in 200m of water , how did ya's go Adam ??? got a couple of pics of you and the boys , I'll email them to you when I put them in the pooter .

We only managed some pinkies , red snapper , swallow tail's , Sambo's and a lonely black arse, not one Skippy today , was very strange out there thats for sure managed to tag a few pinkies as well so we'll see if they get recaptured one day .

We'll be out again tomorrow so we hope to do better .

Saturday's Report

Sun, 2006-06-18 12:11

Well, seeing as the conditions looked nice early we bypassed our inshore spots and headed straight to the containers. The first couple of drifts we decided not to use the drift anchor, bad call that was! The current must have been moving nearly 3-4 knots out there yesterday, the drifts were horrid. We tried holding the boat in reverse over the container and I had one major hookup that got busted off in 10 seconds flat, didn't feel like a sambo thou. We decided to move into a barge spot on the south side in 75m, with double drift anchors and 20 ounce lead we still struggled to hold bottom. Finally we managed to pick up a couple of nice black ass and Mark got a 45cm sambo that we tagged and released, we then moved in even closer as the lump we were fishing was alive on the sounder but no body seemed very hungry.

In closer to Rotto in the 40's I hooked into a nice sambo around the 12kg mark which gave me some serious herbs. Mark started jigging when I was on and landed his fish, 53cm tagged and released and mine went 90cm and released well. 10 minutes later I managed to hook into a yellow tail king on my bottom gear, he came up really easy but upon seeing the boat went nutzo and gave some serious runs for a small fish. I was pretty stoked to break in another species I'd been wanting to get at. Things went quiet after that so we headed into the pub to pick up a 6'er for the way home. Stopped at the 3 mile on the way in and got a few assorted reefies and watched as Mark hooked into another big inshore sambo only to be busted off almost instantaneously. Was a pretty good day out there, except for that bloody current!

Also saw the first whales come through for the season. Will post up a pic of the kingy as thats the only one we took all day.

Managed 11 Dhuies ( 5 keepers , 6 tagged )north of Rotto with Foxfish, Swallow tails, red snappers and banded sweep to keep us busy , strange that the Skippy have gone real quiet last couple of weeks ?????? anyone getting skippy out deep???? we were nailing heaps and then nothing in the last 4 trips out wide ????

Had some whales swim up to within 10 m of the boat while on the drift , was truely awesome with 3 whales around the boat and they are huge up close got some real good video of them off the bow with all the punters up front taking pics , really finished the day off nicely.

CHEERS , MAV.

Great report guys. Don't know where the skippy went, we saw one random school on the sounder quite a way off the containers that could have been them, but with that current the way it was we didn't bother dropping over it. Heard there were meant to be pinks out there with them but haven't seen any proof thou.
