Whale carcass sends tiger sharks into feeding frenzy
** See video footage at this link **
Tiger sharks have been enjoying a feeding frenzy in the Ningaloo Marine Park following the death of a humpback whale a fortnight ago.
Keen fisherman Adam Gallash, who runs WA's biggest fishing website www.fishwrecked.com , witnessed the first hours of the attack and took rare video footage of the feeding frenzy.
"There were 10 to 12 tiger sharks of between six to 13 feet just feasting on the whale. They didn't seem to take much notice of us, they were well and truly blubbered up," Mr Gallash said.
He said the sight of sharks tearing at the carcass in clear shallow water was one he would never forget.
"It is the most amazing thing I have seen in my three years living at Exmouth. I've never seen as many tiger sharks in one place," he said.
The attack took place in the Bundegi Sanctuary zone in the Ningaloo Marine Park.
The footage shows tiger sharks cruising around the dead whale and ripping at its tail fluke and mouth.
One shark is seen thrashing the water as its tears at the humpback's tongue.
Mr Gallash said a number of fishermen witnessed the first hours of the attack while one woman paddled alone among the man-eating sharks in a sea canoe.
The whale carcass has since been tethered to the beach and is floundering in the surf zone at the remote beach.
A spokeswoman from the Department of Environment and Conservation said the whale had been tethered to prevent it floating into a more populated area.
Signs have been posted on the beach near the carcass warning swimmers and divers to stay away from the whale because of the threat from sharks.
The spokeswoman said the whale was expected to take up to 20 weeks to decompose.
