depends

depends. if ur drifting then basiccly any distance is good just make sure the jig is heavy enough to stay about half way down(2.5-3.5). Distance from ur boat doesnt really matter as u can have ur jig within 3m of ur boat and ull still get squid. but if there is weed floating around then it might become a lil tricky. if u are not drifting but anchored then let ur line slowly drift out deeper and put it on a float with the jig fairly close to the bottom.

you didnt hear this from

you didnt hear this from me.  but if you tye a jig to a float with some line throw it over the patch they'll hit it soon enough. i was told if your fishing shallow water dont drive over the ground you intend to drift you'll scare them off. i leave one drifting on a hand line and cats the other one in any direction working it up and down they normally get on the way down. good luck
