What boat to buy
Submitted by oz74 on Mon, 2012-10-15 21:26
Hmmmm, I kow it's a hard question to answer but looking for people's opinion.
if you had $100k to spend and were looking for a boat to tick the following boxes, what would you buy and why:
trailerable <3.5t
fishing and diving
overnight stays (not interested in built in fridges or stoves). Toilet
lockable cabin berth for 2 people and room for swag on deck
outboard engine/s
Able to Walk around sides
cheers.

Need 20k more
Cruisecraft Explorer 6.85m hard top, yami 300hp, or twin 115hp. A monster in my opinion!

Stagg and or Sea Rider boats,
7 to 8 mtr Stagg and or Sea Rider boats, You cant go wrong. The best ali open sea going boats around..
Mind you if you buy new you will need more than a 100K... ;-)
If you look for second hand, they are also hard to find because not many people sell them once they have..
I see a Sea rider for sale in Qld with a deisel donk for about $60k
I've spent half my life fishing.. The other half I have wasted..

Yes most likely looking for
Yes most likely looking for a used boat- ideally no more than 100 hours on the engines or so.
and still undecided on ally or glass. I have had both and both have their pros and cons. If I do go ally, I would be hoping that something in the 7-8 metre range will take some of the "bang" out of it??

little bit cheaper than your looking at but a decent boat.
If i had that money to spend on a boat i would go the extra 20 and get a westerberg southerner 7m. Very nice boats and built for the tough weather down south.

Stabicraft 659 or 2250
Stabicraft 659 or 2250 supercab should fit that budget (new or near new) better ride and stability than the other plate boats. The old mans got a 1850R and I rate that as very good sea boat. Bar crusher also comes to mind.
Glass: edencraft formula newish secondhand or Haines 600R new.
The above boats are not luxury boats though. More serious fishing!

You could get a great import for that...
There is a huge range of imports, not far off new that you could grab for that price. Nice Boston Whaler Walk Around or Centre Console, or near new Seaswirl Walk Around. Both nice boats. Worth a look.
Cant fish from home...

Evolution 650, best glass
Evolution 650, best glass boat of that size I've ever seen, but u might have to go second hand as they are very pricey, or a second hand Haines patriot 760

Those evolutions looked good.
Those evolutions looked good. Shame about the questionable build quality and poor back up.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Should probably have a read
Should probably have a read of this forum before getting an Evolution boat:
http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/showthread.php?187447-Should-we-buy-Australian-Made-boats-or-take-our-chance-offshore
Sounds like the guy got a decent outcome in the end, but they made him jump through hurdles in order to get his problems fixed.

After reading that I hope
After reading that I hope that guy gets his prob sorted, pretty disappointed with that review I really thought they looked like a quality boat, seen the 650 at the boat show, even the bow flare sounded alot more solid than the likes of new carribeans ect

More info
Ok some more info required, what is the purpose of the boat? Just a plain fishing boat with option to camp over places, taking it north? Purely metro based? Long range tanks? Reliability of second engine required?
Site Admin - Just ask if you need assistance

thanks for info
thanks to all for suggestions - all seem like they would be great boats and it will probably just be the case of finding the right one, at the right time, at the right price - easier said than done.
re' more info:
main purpose will be offshore fishing and diving but also have the option of staying overnight at rotto for one or two nights. food/ drink will be in esky's with a bolt-on-bbq for cooking so dont want anything built in. a v-berth for two adults required and a toilet with small holding tank. spacious deck for a swag as well.
most of the time will be metro based but will take it north as well - coral bay, abrolhos etc.
longish range tank would be desirable ~ minimum 300 litres or so and I am open to twin engines as well for added peace of mind and reducing strain on a single. in saying that though, I have onle ever had a single out/inboard and never had any issues.
cheers

There are two types of people ,do'ers and watchers
Right now the do'ers are the doing it
And the watchers are watching us do it

Caribbean 24 Hard Top
Brett,
Have had a 2002 - 24 foot Caribbean hardtop with twin 140 2 stroke mercs for 2 years. After owning a 21 ft Haines, a 20 ft Frazer and a 17 ft Gaurdian over the past 12 years - this Caribbean is amazing. Ticks all of your boxes, but get 4 strokes as the 2's are mighty thirsty. The hull is amazing and i go north to exmouth & mackerals and south to esperance - live in perth. Need a decent 4wd to pull as just over 3 tonne. Great boat if you can get one second hand - $170k new.
Best of Luck!

Probably doesn't meet a few of your requirements, but I'd love to import a Carolina Classic 25 (outboard version with twin 250+ outboards)
