What braid line for Ryoga BJ 2020 with Saltiga BJ64XXXHB
Submitted by fergo on Sun, 2014-06-15 09:33
Hi,
i just got myself the above mentioned. was wondering what poundage/PE should i get for this setup? looking to do some light jigging here in WA. Pretty interested in Daiwa Tournament Accudepth 20lbs. any comments?
Lastly, should we follow PE or lbs? different brands have the same PE but different poundage. for eg. XXX brand PE1 and YYY brand PE1 could be 5-10lbs different in poundage. if the rod max is PE1, how do i know which PE to go for?
Appreciate if you guys can help me clarify my doubts.
Thanks!

Mate, good quality gear
Mate, good quality gear there alright, about the line, I've had some bad experience with it parting easily under shock load, I have even been able to snap 20lb with my bare hands (couple of wraps and pulling apart quickly), this includes some of the other high end brands as well, be interested to hear if others have had the same experience. I know the Ryoga, and Pluton, which I have, have limited spool space so I settled on 30lb whiplash which has certainly behaved itself and I have nailed some good fish on it (big trout, cod and chinamen). Hope this helps and good luck.

I like the accudepth and
I like the accudepth and have 50lb on our BJ. I suggest the 30lb for you as it will give good capacity like the Whiplash as it is still very thin.

Braid
Hey mate the Gossen 8 ply Braid is an awesome smooth multi coloured braid and everyone who works here uses it and trusts it 100%. We have had issues with the Accudepth braid snapping previously and no longer stock it. This issue seemed to be most prevelant in 40lb and less. On your Ryoga the Gossen PE2 - 30lb braid will be perfect to tackle all demersal species up and down the state.
As for what rating to use. Its personal prefference. In an ideal world all rods should be rated via pounds or kilograms not a diameter. Alot of rods these days that use PE ratings for their blanks will also supply a max drag test aswell. Just make sure your line class is heavier than that max drag test and you should be sweet. This is a very rough guide but atleast an idea.

Yep
Thats fine mate. Use the gear to its full potential. If you dont load the rod past its suggested strain and its not high sticked you wont have an issue. If you feel more comfortable we also stock PE 1.5 - 25lb too.

sorry for the asking so many
sorry for the asking so many questions. i just got confused there...
"If you dont load the rod past its suggested strain and its not high sticked you wont have an issue"
when you mentioned dun load past its suggested strain. what do you mean by that? my understanding is max 25lbs printed on the rod = max 25lbs line. no?
as for high sticked the rod, i understand that as my friend just broke his rod last week by raising the rod too high with a 30-40kg stingray on the other end. was off the jetty hence he was trying to bring the line closer to him so he can cut the line. (he was using a pretty long rod at that time)
but anyways, this may sound like a silly question. i just wan to clarify. hope you understand.

Won't generally be any
Won't generally be any problem using 30lb braid on a rod rated to 25lbs, what you need to remember is your only setting the drag at a third of this (8-10lb) anyway so unless your tightening the drag and lifting high the rod should cope fine.
