We caught several of these over Xmas just south of Cliffhead. My partner thought they were baby mulloway too so we released them :)

Below is a copy I took from this very site under ' Fish Identification Guide '

Some very good fish ID pics and info for all of us and I would recommend to all if you have a good pic of your fish please see about getting it included in the library.

        Sand Bass - Psammoperca waigiensis
Wed, 2010-06-02 03:03

Also known as Glass-eyed Perch and False Barra, Sand Bass vary from light silvery grey to dark brown, sometimes with white vertical bars on their body.  The eyes have a glassy appearance with a reddish glow, especially when caught at night.  The lateral line extends onto the caudal fin and they have one large flat spine at the rear of the pre-operculum.

Sand Bass grow to 47cms in length.

They are considered average to poor eating.

In Australia, Sand Bass are found from Fremantle Western Australia, around the tropical north to southern Queensland, inhabiting rocky or coral reefs, weedy areas, holes and crevices.

haha okay, each to their own

Tue, 2013-01-29 14:30

haha okay, each to their own i guess, maybe you got one that was vegetarian..

Ive eaten 3 or 4 and all had baitfish and crustaceans inside the guts, needless to say if i get another one it'll definately be a keeper in my books.

Dont smell anything like buff bream at the filleting table either..

Do look alot like a barra,

Do look alot like a barra, even the eyes when you shine a torch on them.

If you get another one try it , guarantee you will be impressed with the taste, very firm white flesh, get a good fillet off them too..

As opposed to the stinking green flesh of a buff bream haha..
