What did your last outboard service cost

ok, I know we have had many threads of different issues of servicing and costs etc.

So lets keep this one to s simple statement for us all to compare.

Motor: 2001 Mercury Salwater EFI 250HP

cylinders / stroke: V6 / 2 Stroke

Serivice type: Major

Cost: $867 per motor.

Where: Hillaries area ( dont name dealer, just area)

This way we can get a good idea of what we getting for our money these days.

I was shocked that my 2 strokes service costs where as high as a 4 strokes these days

Wed, 2012-03-07 09:57

So you've read all the "Technical Service Notices"sent out by Yamaha to there dealers. Regarding checking for issues, new adjustments and warranty regarding after market oil filters , wrong oil effecting warranty then? You've completed the retention work required and measured pressures. Check the sensors are set correct and all warning systems are in place?

Really if it was that simple why would they bother with a 4 year trade degree and numerous re training every year..

The first service is possibly the most important one. (as long as the dealer is doing it right)

Bluemule, up till now I have done all my own outboard maintenance including full rebuilds. As a motor mechanic and heavy diesel mechanic I actually enjoy working on outboards .Although I nearly fainted when I asked the price of the 20 hr service , I didn"t fork out thousands for a new donk only to have the warranty voided because I saved a couple of hundred  on a service .

Rod , "as long as the dealer is doing it right" . Well said mate .

Fri, 2012-02-24 18:04

 3.3HP Mercury

$38 for impeller and $12 for a bottle of gear oil and sparkplug.

Still have a grease gun loaded full of grease to squirt in the shiny nipples!\

So, $50 notes.

I do all the service work on my old Mercruiser as well and the bill for parts is not much higher than the 3.3HP other than extra engine oil, leg gearbox oil, fuel- and oil filter!

$200 and still some change.

Just did the impeller on that and the price of the impeller was the same as the 3.3

Go figure

change spark plugs and leg oil, occasionally drop the leg and change the impellor

you are ohnestly ripping yourself off if you pay someone to do this for you as it is so so easy.

Have certainly considered that Kane but its a time issue for me at the moment - have so many other things to do to the boat before going away as well,  just wanted it done before a trip away for a few weeks. if it going to be $500 I'd be doing it when I came back as motor is running fine anyway.

Fri, 2012-02-24 23:51

Well - most outboards are so easy to work on - and believe it or not parts can be sourced fairly cheap. (if you look around)

I can do the works on my Yammie 4 stroke for around $150 - with water pump etc....

Just download a manual on line most are available at little or no cost - two strokes are even easier

If you look around you can even get the software to plug a lappie into more recent motors (although this needs a fairly robust understanding)

Most motors would take less than a couple of hours to service if well looked after - as for the trailer it's all basic stuff - Just keep on top of it

The TAFE used to do a really good course on outboard maintenance, may still do - if you go on this there is not much you would not tackle.

As others have said, must be in the wrong game.........Some of the prices mentioned are absolutely ridiculous

Cheers

Sun, 2012-02-26 13:17

So I knocked up over 300 hours this year but still only servicing it once a year. I does only clean water driving so the impeller isn't pushing sand and mud.

To service a otor 3 times a year even at $700 is too much IMO.

Hi Rob

Hi Rob,

Did get the manual but decided it was just easier to get it done in the end, saves hassles.

No he didn't do any valve adjustments or timing belts, said every 400 hours would be fine and that all seemed good.

Having said this, 2 days later had a temp sensor alarm go off and now he's had the boat for about a week (still got it) waiting for a water pump and thermostat, sigh.

I new of a dealer once who ever time a alarm light flashed on the gauge would go in and replace parts, as he thought it was a faulty alarm sensor. It was actually a code that needed to be reset after service only....

You do need to ask around and you WILL get what you pay for..

Prices will vary depending on

Prices will vary depending on your engine what service you receive and what work is performed and needed to be completed

You will find that most larger dealerships service price will be a a bit more then some smaller workshops as they have bigger overheads and have to keep a set price on standard servicing Average is $99p/h -$120p/h and alot higher in remote places (eg up north)

Not all outboards are the same and parts pricing and hours allowed will vary, also dealerships have factory trained machanics and can handle warranty issues upgrades and recalls.

I have been in the industry for over 12 years and spent most of that working for Hayway Marine as the service manager running the retail workshop and know 1st hand there is only a small amount of "good" marine technicians in perth as alot have retired form the industry and some have moved out of the industry chasing better pay .

I have also seen alot of dodgy service work and repairs and customers that have been charged for work and parts that have not been carried out also poor workmanship and messy work. And some that think a service is only water pump service spark plugs filters and oils but there is alot more involved on different engines as alot have parts that do fail and do require sevice and adjustment (depending on how the engine is treated) that get left un touched by un qualified techs,

You do get what you pay for at the end of the day and i would advise to speak to your tech and find out what work has been performed and what your money is paying for if you are concerened, also what general maintainace should be performed buy you the owner on a regular basis to help keep your engine in the best condition

Most average owners will do 100 hour a year but some will do 500, i beleive the more hours the better i have never rebuilt a worn out engines only poor maintained ones!

Any questions or info need i am more then happy to help out!

too true Brendan, corrosion/lack of use etc will kill a modern 4 stroke before over use!

Thats Spot on Rob the ones that sit around and only get used a few time of the year are the ones i find have most of the probs, and 90% are fuel probs, i dont even flush my engines in summer as i use them a few times a week only if they are parked up for a few weeks if im not on the water ,i would however recommend a product called MACS that you flush your engine with once or twice a year it realy works

I just got a quote for a 300hr service on my outboard both from Suzuki dealers and one quote came back at $790 and the other came back at $520 both including parts and labour. Unfortunately the cheaper one is going to be an hour drive through peak hour rather than 10 mins down the road but for $270 it’s worth the drive and that’s $270 I can spend on something else.

From what I've heard and read your making the right call. One is known for high cost and not the greatest reputation the other is hard to get a hold of and south of river but worth it, I bought my donk from the latter and very happy. About to get mine serviced but iam lucky they come to my house because I purchased from them

Yep the guy who I think you are talking about in pinjarra is a top guy and busy as well, cause he provides a exceptional standard of work for a realistic price. Yes you might have to wait for a week or two but who hasn't let their car service go over by a few Kay's

Yeah, it includes service and standard parts. Another Suzuki dealer in Mandurah comes in at a similar price, I'm guessing the pricing is reflecting the amount of competition on either side of the river as there is only one NoR and 4 SoR.

I used to use the bloke down in pinjarra for years and even purchased a couple of motors from him. I now use Seapower in freo by memory service for 300hr service was around 300.00.

Pm if you want to know the reasoning behind why I changed.

DF150 4 stroke

Picked it up today.

Yearly service (has 253 Hours on the printout)

$985 full service with additional items of replacing the water separator housing (not just the filter) and new thermostat.

They even did a couple of little jobs that I asked for and didn't charge me for them so can't complain too much.
