Boat starts in gear

Howdy all
I know it's going to sound strange but since I replaced the lower leg on my 30 hP mariner when I start it in neutral it is actually in gear prop turning and I have to put it between neutral and reverse for it to be in neutral. I can't start it in that position thow, I have to put the lever back in right position to start it , which is in gear no good when you are tied to the jetty and trying to warm her up. Also I have reverse but it's not very fast only just moves boat real slow any ideas please Dakka

I'm no gurru, but it sounds like your selector shaft was misaligned when you joined the lower housing (leg) to the top housing. I suggest. Put the leg in neutral, remove it from the motor. Set the motor in neutral and join the two again. That is what I would try.

many manuals write about
many manuals write about doing it this way (as quest suggests) however on every outboard I have owned, it is easier to do it by having it in gear.
Reason being, you can turn the prop to line up the spline while lifting the leg.
In neutral you cant

Try putting the lever in the
Try putting the lever in the neutral position where the control lever should be, to start the engine, pull the leg and re-adjust the gear position shaft on the leg back to neutral, test by spinning the prop freely, and watch the driveshaft does not turn, check that the lever is still in neutral position, and re-install leg - this way you can be sure you have the position correct - I agree with the boys above though - it is harder to get the shaft lined up, but you will be sure you have the right position, and just wiggle the leg a bit and it should slide in.
There is normally an electric limit switch in the neutral position that protects the motor from starting in gear.
This should solve the reverse issue too, as you are just a few teeth out on gear alignment.
