What knot to join Mono to Leader?
Submitted by Knot Big Enuff on Thu, 2012-11-01 16:15
Hey All,
Was wondering what knot everyone uses to join mono to leader ... specifically light mono (1, 2, 3 Kg) to heavy leader (40lb +)
I used quite a few over the years ... Plait/Bimini Twists to Wind-ons, Improved Albright, Slim Beauty ... etc
Slim Beauty passed most of the bench tests, however, takes time to tie and look right.
Any thoughts or "new" knots in the market I need to know?

For trolling or casting?
For trolling or casting? Need to find a better knot myself but for trolling I've done an Aussie plait or Bimini in the mono then a gt to the heavier mono. Not the "correct" knot but was at least reliable in strength. I think I went with 5 or 6 passes instead of the 10-12 in braid. To a wind on I use the double and do a "double twisted cats paw". I forget the exact name but its like a double cats paw but you twist the double after the first pass before dropping the leader through. You can tie it like a gt knot dropping the line through the loop though. For straight mono there's a knot on fishnet called the Ted donelan knot.
Some fly fishers I know do a Bimini double then a slim beauty as close as possible to the double for near 100% strength but no open loops. Don't forget you can use uv knot sense or similar to stop the tag catching and to seal the knot. Not sure if IGFA approved or not.
to be sure of any knots you can test them on scales.

Hey mate - cheers buddy, and
Hey mate - cheers buddy, and yes it's maily for trolling. I usually test all my knots on a scale, even when they state 100% strength. May try the GT, but my issue is to get away from the double. Bimini creats too much twists in mono, not good ... Plait is too hard/impossible in light lines. Hence why I use the slim beauty sometimes

No Knot
Im not using a knot for light gear Hesh.
I have a mainline double tied to a snap swivel then run longer leaders on my lures from that.
Havent found too many knots that work well and easy with really light mono for connecting to leader.

I think I'll go with that
I think I'll go with that Tim! I know you land fish on 1s mate!! Do you trust the Bimini on mono, or do like me and wear the glasses to put a Plait together on the 1 kg?!
PS you can tell that I'll go hard on you at the WA Opening ;) haha ... All spooled up and ready to go ... Well, weeks before hand

Blood knot
To be honest I use a locked blood knot most of the time.
Amazing how many rigs you will tie during the day on 1 & 2 Hesh

If you have a double, you can
If you have a double, you can tie it to a swivel by using a catspaw. If theres nothing connected to the swivel its really easy, as you put the double through, bend it back, then twist the swivel the right number of times, then use some spit to pull it up. The disadvantage to this method is you cant pull your leader onto the reel when controlling the fish at the boat (again, not sure on IGFA rules, but I think you can have a rather long leader?)

Knots
The idea of this method is to make it easy Matt. Any knot in 1kg mono is hard work and trying to tie a light line to a leader is near on impossible.
Thats why I went with this method and have no problems at all. Also you can have a relatively long leader on the lures but I tend to stick to about 2m which makes it easier to handle the fish around the boat.

If you get good at the Albright it's a really good knot just keep practicing it- and when your chasing big game I go Bimini into double Albright works every time 90% of the time

Quick
Hesh what ever you use, you need to be able to tie pretty quick on a rolling boat. Like Tim said will tie a few in a day. quick double, swivel clip and snap on a new lure. Heres hoping it is better weather than last year

look up "sebile knot" on
look up "sebile knot" on youtube. An easy method and I havent had one come undone yet. I use it on heavier lines (20+lb) for jigging, so not sure how it goes on the lighter stuff.
