What Strength Wind-On?
Submitted by symetre on Sat, 2012-01-14 19:51
Im heading over to Perth next Sambo season so starting to get some gear together.
I was curious as to how heavy is the standard wind-on leader being used on the charters is over there.... i was thinking 120lb or 150lb.... is this enough or as a general rule are you guys using heavier or lighter wind-ons?
Im specifically talking the charters here... so deep water sambo jigging.
Appreciate any opinions.

If your using 80lb gear then
If your using 80lb gear then 120 is heaps .. its not the sambo's that have teeth .. can go lighter to 100 if you want more action out of the jigs

i use 50lb gear and run 80lb
i use 50lb gear and run 80lb leader on a stella5. 80lb braid isnt much fun, wanna hear the drag screeeeeeeeeem. also, there wasnt much fishing in the 100s due to sharks. but the sambos were thick in the 40-60m mark. saltwater and bluejuice did well out from hillarys, the other charter company didnt even fish the sambos

80lb leader is fine. If a
80lb leader is fine. If a shark takes the jig or you get pulled to the wreck, no amount of leader will save you.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I ususally use 100lb leader.
I ususally use 100lb leader. I wouldnt use a wind on though. The slip knot on the windons arent not so much designed for constant adding and releasing of weight. Under constant pressure they're good, but not really designed for jigging. You'd probably be unlucky to loose one, but more chances. Also, most windons are 5m, and you definitely dont want that long for sambo jigging. Better off just going with a spool of leader and using a GT knot or equivalent strength knot and about 2m of leader.
