Has to be mulies or
Has to be mulies or pilchards, great bait either whole or in pieces for all species and great burley either cubed or mushed up, can catch anything on it, even the next best bait, squid. Master a species on bait then try lures for a challenge
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Depends on how you mean best.
Depends on how you mean best. Best as in most likely to produce almost any species of fish in almost any location, mulies for sure. Best as in the best buzz when you get a fish, surface lures, that visual strike gets me everytime.
Just because I smile & nod does not mean I believe the crap coming out of your mouth.

if your just starting out
if your just starting out which it sounds like you are stick with bait lure fishing could prove quite frustrating at first. just do a bit of research on the area you want to fish and target speies you are chasing mulies are a great bait but may not be the best in every situation,
for example if you are fishing for whiting you would be using very small peices, very small peices of mulie can be picked off the hooks quite easily by whiting, especially if your not very experienced. in this case some coral prawn would probably be a better bait.
when you go to buy your bait go to a local tackle shop rather than a Big Chain Fishing shop and talk to the guys that work there they will usualy point you in the right direction, so i hear the guys in oceanside fremantle are friendly, knowlagable and helpfull.
hope this helps a bit mate

Mate cant go wrong with
Mate cant go wrong with pillies, under a float whole, unweighted, spun, diced filleted the list goes one ive caught everything from kingfish, jewies. salmon, tailor, sharks, squid, bream, snapper (pb snapper landbased 64cm was on half a pillie out of the packet), trevally, flathead, whiting, mackeral in qld, bonito off the rocks, learherjacket, yakkas you name it!
Next best is squidgey wriglers, has caught most of the above species including kingies and snapper aswell as tailor salmon flatties and yakkas even! 65mm squidgey wriggler cant go wrong.
Halco twistie, seriously good lure! 10-30gram size is deadly on everything! Its got the profile of whitebait/small pillies/ flash of a darting yakka or gar, spun from the rocks if the fish arent hitting that either worked deep like a shore jig or blazing along rhe surface then you must be fishing a swimming pool!! Haha
fillet of tailor! When fresh this is a gun shark bait and ive caught many large tailor and jews on a fillet of tailor. Fishing at night in the gutter youre sure to hookup on something!
Mullet head, go to jewie bait a bit firther north, in queensland the head of a poddy mullet will outfish a whole squid any day!
Yakka head, if youre into catching monster eels from the rocks while youre bottom bashing give it a crack :p :p :p :p (thought id throw that one in just in case! )
Hope thats helpful!

Well said Sarge,i find also
Well said Sarge,
i find also that if you have confidence in a lure, your more inclined to give it a wash more often, therefore giving it more time to catch fish in the area....
i never used to use poppers, i knew the worked ( they had too everyone else said so) but until i had caught a fish on it (after i lost my other lures i gave it a crack)
and now as im more confident in its ability, i will give it at least 20 casts most beach/rock fishing sessions.
my girlfriend hates baiting her hook ( ive tried many times to get her to toughen up!) so one arvo i got over it, and gave her a lil twisty and she just looked at me with this look of
' you serious" and now its all she uses.
confidence in your lures ability to catch fish is a big key
