Whats black and doesn't work?

Yeah you got it,,, my mercury 140 v6

So the thing starts fine when cold but refuses to start when warm!!!

I can get it started fine when i put it in the water and get out there but turm it off for a drift then after 20-30 min to move it wont start.

I've just changed the coil packs and spark plugs hoping that would help but no. it goes great once started but have to let it cool right down for maybe an hour plus which we all know out there isnt good.

Everytime this happens i take it on the river and test it for hours but no problem but as soon as i take it on the ocean BAM the problem comes back, really mercury are you scared of the ocean????

Also i've noticed that the ignition beeper beeps once when you turn the key to run then when it's turned to start it sounds like a constant broken mono tone, thinking this could be a faulty ignition? but dont think thats the starting problem as it starts fine when cold..

Someone please help as i'm at an end with it all..... just want to fish.

what they call vapour lock up north. Same thing as you describe. Just had to let it cool down a bit and then pump the fuel up to it. Mind you they were 4 stokes. The heat turned the fuel to vapour and wouldn't travel along the line properly. Tried checking your fuel and oil filter/strainers?

That alarm might be your 2 stroke oil alarm. It is a 2 stroke aye??

yeah 2 stroke

Mon, 2015-12-28 15:36

 Hey mate,

Cheers for the input, your right about the 2 stroke and the alarm being the same as the ignition.

I've had that problem on my last engine but the beeping for the oil was every couple of seconds this sounds more like a crow rather than an alarm sound.

plenty of oil in the tank.

As for the filters I've got 3 in total one being a seperation filter and 2 just normal inline filters either side of it, all seem to be fine.

as we all know it can turn pretty nasty pretty damn quick out there so can't be waiting an hour to restart the engine. I need a soloution!!!

Don't.....

Mon, 2015-12-28 17:52

When drifting don't turn it off....leave the motor  in idle.

Don't muck around with it yourself... hunt down an outboard mech with plenty of Merc experience.  State the Yr of Manufacture. . It maybe a more common issue than you realise.

Check ALL FUEL LINES...  could be a small hole allowing air in thus starving the motor of juice. You can check this by running the mtr on a seperate fuel tank and line under similar conditions to when it's not starting.

Something is definitely not right.  My old Johno 2 banger ran beautifully cold but once she heated up developed what appeared a random miss. .. no sequence or logic it would seem. .. turned out to be a stator ( I think that's the terminology). Replaced that and ran good as gold.

Anyway it's a problem solving issue. . Start with the easy logical things you can do.  Get a 44gallon drum. .. full with water... get that mtr warmed up and Tackle with confidence whilst directing  effective invective at that bloke known as Murphy.  Good luck.

Noise

Wed, 2015-12-30 12:39

Hi

To be honest mate I dont go out there to listen to a dirty 2 stroke all day, I go out for a bit of peace and quiet so leaving the engine running isn't an option.

I'm not doing the work myself, I have a mate who's a marine machanic but it's got him stumped as well thats why i'm throwing out to the masses.

I've tried the other fuel tank and lines but still the same issue and done the stator.

alarm.

Tue, 2015-12-29 14:59

The drone noise is an alarm.  Usually low oil alarm.  I had a 40hp years ago and it went was told the sender is only held together with glue and some 2 stroke oils disolve the glue. Just disconnect it and see if the drone goes away. If it doesnt its probably another alarm and probably one that wont let the motor start. It will still turn over but wont go. Like when the safety lanyard switch is activated. Motor will still turn over but not start. I would check the lanyard switch and wiring harness and joins for corrosion.  Corroded wiring and joins cause all sorts of wierd motor faults. I check mine once a year and sometimes  find a dodgy join or a cut in insulation thats let water in.

Sorted

Hi Mate,

Tried that and no joy but there is plenty of oil in there.

The engine starts fine when cold so that alarm isn't causing a problem there.

check the breather on the oil reservoir - may be blocked and causing a vacuum

Relays.

Thu, 2015-12-31 07:26

If you have a dodgy relay or corroded wire they may work fine when cold. When the motor heats up the resistance increases in the relay coil or wire and relays wont engage when hot or the voltage through a hot corroded wire may not be high enough to run what it is supposed to. Im just sayin as most faults ive had over the years have been put down to corroded wiring or dodgy relays especially as a motor ages. Can be really hard to find sometimes. Have you checked for spark when it wont start?   And the simple one breather on the fuel tank?

Hot start problem.

Thu, 2015-12-31 11:54

Had something similar with the Yamaha 4 stroke 115f.

Turned out to be an exhaust sender unit faulty. Motor thought it was too hot so wouldn't start for at least an hour. And yes it would start when testing, needs to get to operational temp.

The techs told me i could have just disconnected the wires on it, and that would bypass it.

Assume you've cleaned the carbie?

I had gum in mine (Yammie 115) blocking a jet. Used to have to start it (warm) on the choke to kick it in the guts and it wouldn't maintain low idle speed.

A few things.

Wed, 2016-01-06 15:50

Can you smell fuel when it wont start?  If you can maybe a choke problem.    If you cant smell fuel spray some inox or crc in the carby inlet. it should at least try and start when turned over. If it wont then it could be an ignition problem.   Ignition problems can be hard to diagnose could just be a loose or corroded wire or coil breaking down spark maybe not strong enough  when hot.
