Where is this? Big rolling break near Perth
Submitted by ranmar850 on Wed, 2020-05-06 12:18
Just watched the Rob Kirby Naiad video on The Captain Youtube channel. Ok, much of it is around Rotto, but there is some beautiful drone footage of the boats running around in a big breaking swell. Appears to be a shallow patch with deeper water inside. Not intimately familiar with the area. Would this be west end somewhere, or 5 fathom bank north of GI in a big swell? The Stragglers? Just curious. Link to video below, first shot is just 0.17 in, then 0.47, then keeps recurring.

My instantaneous reaction was I needed to be on the water--- I'd love to jump the Reefrunner off those .

Naiad
When Carnarvon Sea Rescue's 10 metre Naiad was getting built we came down to check out progress and Rob Kirby took us out for a run in his 10 metre sports version with twin 350 Yammies on the back. Aftwer half an hour touring Cockburn sound at 30 plus knots in a screaming sea breeze he asked if we had ever been wave jumping and of course one dumb f#$k said no.
So it was out between Carnac and Rotto launching off the swells to show us how well they handled it. Mind you, there are some pics I have seen of the Albany Sea Rescue 8.5 Naiad launching off a huge swell and they worked it out to be around 10 metres out of the water.
When our boat was finished and sea trials complete we took it all the way to Carnarvon by sea, first stop overnight was Dongara, refuel in Gero, next stop Shark Bay and a quick sprint to Carnarvon next morning. The conditions were not ideal but we averaged 25 knots for the trip. Knowing what I know now and what they can handle it would have been a whole lot quicker if I had to do it again.

When I did my marsar a few
When I did my marsar a few years ago I went up to Broome and used their 9m.
The water police coxwain told me to throw it around and see what it could do. I gave it a bit of a squirt but he wasnt impressed and took it off me.
Ive never been sick on a boat or a roller coaster but I think another couple of minutes I wouldn't of been well. Those things hang in like nothing else. Was very impressive.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

$5 grand each
The Ulman seats cost $5 grand each and in my opinion are a pain in the ass. Okay if you are going for a quick sprint but if you have to sit on one for hours on end during a long search they make you legs sore like riding a trail bike without shockies.
Quite a few of the rescue groups have gone away from the Ulmans to a more conventional suspension seat

Definitely Rotto
The opening scene and where they are doing donuts is FishHook Bay, just inside West End. Big rollers are West End.
