Where to buy cheap outboard oils?

Hi there.

Does anyone know where to buy oils and plugs etc for an outboard service at the right price in perth. Is there some kind of warehouse?

Oil is the engines blood

Mon, 2010-04-26 06:52

While petrol is the engines food, oil is its blood, I would not use anything but the recommended best. Same goes for spark plugs. In the overall picture, how much are you going to save by going cheap? by scimping on a few dollars you may also get aprematurly worn motor, a tow back to base etc.

Yes totally agree,

Was actually looking to find somewhere around perth that sells the quality products, maybe a wholesaler or in lager quantities for less.

Mon, 2010-04-26 12:33

no brand oils it will be fine

i buy my 4 stroke outboard oil from repco its name is"valvoline 4 stroke oil for outboards" mineral based as well it cost 36 bucks for 5 litres

dont forget to pick up a oil filter as well

as for sparkplugs, check auto stores or someplace like chivers marine.

now matter were u buy, you'll still save like 2-300 bucks servicing the engine yourself

but may be voiding your warranty using aftermarket crap! not a problem on an older engine but a big issue when things go wrong on a newer one

servicing

Mon, 2010-04-26 17:46

Go to any yamaha dealer and buy genuine parts. buy the yamalube engine oil aswell. why risk 15k engine for the sake of saving a hundred bucks buying aftermarket parts.
for an annual service you should be changine engine oil and filter, gearbox oil, spark plugs, all fuel filters, checking themostat, replacing waterpump impeller and checking anodes.

2 stroke Yamalube

Mon, 2010-04-26 17:57

I am paying near on $50 for 4L from my local Yamaha dealer, I would be interested to know where it could be found cheaper, even if in 10 or 20L amounts.

i love how people say

Mon, 2010-04-26 21:28

anything not genuine is "crap" most of the time its the same thing.

do you really think yamaha engineers designed yamalube with precision mixtures/ingredients to provide the ultimate protection for your engine- hell no

for ex, on honda's genuine dirtbike oil, the oil is just motul or something, still good though.

my dad has used castrol GTX and other similar oils in his hilux which is now 23 years old and still going strong.

how do you even know your mechanics are even changing the oil?, how do you know they arent putting used oil in?, how do you know they didnt just add a bit of oil so it looks like they changed it?

we use valvoline mineral based outboard oil in our mercury 60hp 4 stroke, its good oil

my grandad doesnt put new oil in his 60 year old masser ferguson tractor, he puts USED oil in it from a car or from the boat.

i suppose you go with what you want, yes it may void warranty

but i've had a experience where something was wrong and the warranty took care of it, tell you what because they had to work on the engine for free they didnt werent enthusiastic about fixing either

funny thing is we had a mercury 80hp and apart from rebuilding it twice ourselves after 20 years we did almost no maintenance at all and it never let us down

Marine oils have extra

Mon, 2010-04-26 21:43

Marine oils have extra additives added .

Using other brands in your car is fine.

Oil lubricates/cools and cleans carbon fromn your engine, unless its a diesel , I think you would know if it's old oil, Even the new generation common rail diesels oil stays clean for  a bit.

Oil breaks down, using used oil is crazy, Why do you think all major commercial operators,Boat/Truck/Farm get oil tests done .

OIL'S CHEAP MOTORS ARNT!!!

I would only use genuine

Mon, 2010-04-26 21:34

I would only use genuine parts in your motor no matter what,
Your get manufactures warranty on all parts, I used a aftermarket head gasket once, genuine wasn’t available. It leaked, heap of bullshit trying to get warranty, never again,
As to the 2 stroke, using non genuine oils can damage your tank senders, plus the excess carbon build up cheaper oils create, Genuine oil exceeds tcw3 where aftermarket only meets it.
Chivers is a new Yamaha dealer, I purchase all my parts from them.

Damo are you doing the service yourself.

Mon, 2010-04-26 21:57

The motor looks new, is it still in warranty? If still in warranty, perhaps it will pay to get the service done by the supplier.

If doing the service yourself, the savings on four spark plugs per year and the same on the oil dosn't seem worth the hassle of buying in bulk, when the motor only gets serviced once a year.

Being a fourstroke motor, you can probably get those products from Coventrys or Repco at a reasonable price and good quality. The oil filter and fuel filters will need to be genuine though.

i wouldnt use old oil in

Mon, 2010-04-26 22:10

anything but the tractors

those old masseys are built rough and simple and can take a lot, old oil is finefor them and 60 year(all 3 of them) shows that they havent a problem with it(knock on wood haha)

wats the point of buying new oil for a 60 year old tractor that leaks oil when youve got litres of used but clean condition car oil?

yes i would always use marine 4 stroke oil, just not the expensive full synthtic one when a mineral based one does fine.

we never have and never will use genuine oil in our 30hp 2 stroke being carburated its fine.

i would always use genuine for something like a head gasket because those are things were i really would not feel like taking the POS apart again.

considering (in general) the amount of hours youre boat runs and gets servieced  compare to your car your oil shouldnt even get super dirty quick unless youre really clocking some hours in.

remeber the dipstick only shows oil from the top of the sump not all the crud and dirtier oil down below.

on lots of oil genuine is just some other brand with a different name on it

if youve changed engines oil its funny how on the dipstick the oil is clean but once you drain it it sure is a different colour.

lots of people dont check the oil regulary or after a service so they are the people that wouldnt know if its dirty or not let alone if it looks like they have changed it

i can understand why you would want to get your boat serviced and use genuine stuff but the cost of servicing is a bloody rip off

watch how they'll be a thread about my outboard siezing soon LOL

major commercial company would want to have oil test done if they have a 500+ grand machine that earns them there living

Some outboards require full

Tue, 2010-04-27 08:41

Some outboards require full synethic, others it can damge it.

Oil cleans carbon from your motor it will go brown,, I service all our vechicles every 5000k's oil is brown.Boats every 50 hours.

Outboards run a tapered sump, run the motor then check it on a white rag,

Clients with 50k motors ask for oil test's.

Ive been a marine mechanic since I was 18 {32 now} Service/Repaired from Chryslers to Vovlos,

I only use genuine parts in my own motors and clients, MY impeller looks like new, still go's in the bin,

You can't get out and walk, At the price of a new motor $25k, Ill choose Genuine parts!

aftermarket parts

Tue, 2010-04-27 04:58

With marine doctor on aftermarket parts, i used an aftermarket impeller and key once, spun the key and could have cost a powerhead. I average 15 to 20 services a week and will never use aftermarket parts. I would never think about using used oil. Also some outboards require fully syn engine oils.

i never said i'd use used oil

Tue, 2010-04-27 16:16

in a outboard or car

i said  in a 60 year old massey ferguson tractor.

my engine is fine with mineral oil and if its fine for it i wouldnt think about using synthetic.

youre right that you should use genuine parts like gaskets impeller etc especcialy on these new advanced engines, and agree these engines are sensitive to changes.

i'am just saying that if your manual says you can use mineral etc, i would use it instead of synthetic.
