Where to catch livies for the FAD's
Submitted by davewillo on Fri, 2020-05-08 10:43
Heading to the FAD's tomorrow from Hillarys. We normally stay at Rotto and catch herring there but we can't do that at the moment obviously. As the FAD's are west of Hillarys we don't want to detour to Rotto on the way. Should we just jig bait that we spot on the sounder or are there others suggestions for livies?
Thanks for any advice!

FADS
The FADS will look like a Mongol Hordes invasion tomorrow. Good luck.
My advice would be to get there as early as possible, never bothered with livies myself as I don't have a dedicated live bait tank.

We were out at the northern fad a couple of weeks ago
didn't need livies to catch mahi mahi. We just dropped a mulie with a long trace and ball sinker above the swivel down deep where the birds cant see it and got good size mahi mahi every time. The mahi mahi were very close to the fad though (about 5m away on the north side of the fad) so set up your drift so that you go right past it close. That worked for us anyway, they tasted friggin beautiful fried fresh that night too! good luck

Thanks mate. Maybe we'll
Thanks mate. Maybe we'll just save some time and give the livies a miss. I just find that on busy days (which tomorrow will certainly be) they can get lockjaw from all the boats and anglers. Livies always seem to get them going!

Fads
Hey mate as others have said need to get there early. I have been recently and almost anything works at the moment. If they go quiet small bit of lead on a floater rig or big johns jigs did the trick for us. Notice a few guys chopping up Mulies and that got them on the chew for everyone around again. Good luck

To be honest
Does it matter what sort of livie's you use? By that I mean, would llive wrasse, butterfish, whiting, whatever work?
if so, burley the hell out of the marina or just outside of the marina, catch whatever shit fish possible, keep them alive, and send them out fad first. Thoughts???

Tried with some whiting
Tried with some whiting today.. didn't seem too interested in them which is a surprise. They were still in good condition as caught in 5m (not out deep)
Caught them with herring instead but only had a couple. thinking something silver (yakkas, slime ya etc) is better..

Circle hook buried into a mulie cube no sinker drifted back on the drift of the boat.
Throw out small cubes to keep them interested .

Problem is the Mutton birds
Problem is the Mutton birds if they are around, you'd never get a bait out.

Scubafish if you mean adding
Scubafish if you mean adding a small sinker or throwing my lies the other way as I cast, then that's what I would do to.
