Where do I go from here?

I fish weekly from Mindarie and do quite well but have not ventured much further than the 3 mile reef. We catch a lot of bread and butter fish but are over ripe to head out further and get into some bigger action. We fish in an 18ft boat and fish nearly all conditions (within the 3 mile reef). Can anybody give us some hints about travelling further and finding some good ground? Got NAVMAN tracker 5500 and Fish 4500? Otherwise, always an extra spot on the boat for another fisho.

I'm a mindarie man myself, so I should be able to point you in the right direction.

WEST!!!!

Nah, only joking....but not far off the mark. You will find that other than getting given a GPS spot from someone, nothing beats time on the water exploring for yourself.

To give you a bit of a head start, there are a number of reef systems and bombies in varying depths directly west of Mindarie. If you have a chart plotter you will probably notice two lumps that come up to about 29m. Whilst all you will find here is a heap of SB's there is some good ground that surrounds these lumps both north and south of them. Exploring will get you a couple of marks to try, and in Cray season you need to look out for cray pots as they will generally be on good ground.

Out from those marks another 3nm or so is another patch of good ground, again just drive around and one day you will find one lump. Where there is one you will eventually find twenty or more, just remember to drive between your spots a different way each time so that you go over new ground rather than the same old ground.

Further out again is direction bank, staying inside the bank will get you plenty of spots in 40 - 50m and that will fish pretty well this time of year.

I hope that gives you some encouragement, I myself have fished Mindarie for about 10 years or so and it took me about 5 to venture out behind the three mile (bought a bigger boat) and in 2 years probably amassed 50 decent spots, after 5 years its grown to well over 200. Not all of them fire, but it is great to be able to spread the load a little.

Good luck and I might see you out there. Post a pic of your boat and I'll keep an eye out for you.

Cheers

Andy Mac
