Where's peoples respect for others gone when out fishing

The other week I was fishing about 20nm off rockingham got out to my spot which is a little ledge about 30-40m long with a 1m drop at one end and about 0.5m at the other end. had a few drifts got a few small dhuies and breaksea we never saw a boat the whole way out but after about an hour a boat showed up and started fishing about 30m away much to my disgust but knobs will be knobs.

but within the next 30 mins i had 3 boats come flying past doing about 25knots within about 20m one only just missing my drift anchor float and another 2 more boats pull up and start fishing over the same spot. only good thing was a big school of norwesters came past and all 4 people on one boat and 2 on the other boat hooked up and me and my mate both hooked up ( using stradic 2500 c14 with 8lb braid on a nano 2-4kg flicky and 100mm squidy fish plastics) everyone else had a blowy or a double blowy and I got a 710mm dhuie and my mate got a 510mm breaksea to say we danced around acting like they were both a metre long to rub it in was an understatement we left soon after crossing over a trail of floating blowys and corona bottles from the other boats

next trip out I'm putting up my dive flag and going to have another flag drifting 50m behind us and anyone who comes within the 50m keep clear zone is going to cop a barrage of squid guts from the mutton bird slingshot

What is up with people being to lazy these days to put in the time and effort to go out and find their own spots

I wouldnt recommend putting up a dive flagas they attract fishermen like a mob of mutton birds around a mulie.I stopped using one when diving years ago.

If you ever break down dont worry about using your epirb, just put up a dive flag and boats will come out of nowhere.

Haha yer within 5nm of rotto

Haha yer within 5nm of rotto is shocking  when you put up a flag it's like the equivilant of having a big centerlink sign up on check day

last year I even had the police an fisheries guys come up and jump on the boat wile I was diving with a flag I was sitting at 10m on the deco line when they pulled up have them a bit of "constructive critism" they said they have reason to believe people who were diving for crays were greatly exceeding there limits and have the right to do what ever they like pretty much they wouldn't even give me a location of where these crayfish were ether

I may have to invest in one

Sun, 2014-06-22 09:44

I may have to invest in one of them I just made up a sling shot with 2 gidgy rubbers use it to launch a handful of mulie pieces about 30m out opposite side of the boat to distract the mutton birds at the fads but on the odd occasion it has launched a paper towel full of fish and squid guts like a smelly waterbomb

Do you think you are the only person on the planet that knows that spot.  I admit I get rather frustrated when people park right on top of me and I personally try to stay at least 50m away from another boat, but I accept that other people might know the same spots that I do (which in my case is rather limited)

i think 50m is too close especially when there is 20nm between you and the coastline, but thats my opinion. doesnt matter if you think its a secret spot or not chances are the first bloke has got the fish so why not try somewere else.

Sun, 2014-06-22 10:01

I understand others may have the same spots and I don't really mind if I see a bout that is heading directly for where I am and normally they are ok they head up 100m or so up current and start drifting its the ones that you can see traveling on a different heading then when they notice you they turn and head straight over there normally the ones who come right in close flat out or pull up next to you

I run mine at 20 metres

Sat, 2014-06-21 18:42

After having it much closer and getting hit by a rogue wave which half filled the boat on a relatively good day, anchor held the gunnel down whereas a longer rope gives much more !

The way I see it is that even if 1000 people know the same spot once there is someone on it everyone should respect him and go somewhere else.

We got abused by some bloke

Sun, 2014-06-22 12:42

We got abused by some bloke coz we were going to fish one of our spots, but discovered he was!!! Its not like we were intentially going out of our way to nick his spot, so suppose that proves that its not such a secret spot.

There is no such thing as a secret spot.

just curious as up here in barri when you travel a fair distance its usually to fish a small lump n most of mine are from crayfishing back in the day. What are your thoughts on if you rock up n a charter boat is on it! Do you move or just fish it! I'd personally fish it but bit tricky

common sense and courtesy

Sun, 2014-06-22 19:44

I recently launched out of Gracetown and headed for my secret spot only to find a boat parked on it. I retreated to around 300m away and found some reasonable looking ground but not much happening so about to pack up when the other boat comes over and invited me to come over and fish their mark as they were doing well. I doubt I would have got that response if I had parked closer to them at the start.

Secret spots

Sun, 2014-06-22 20:06

Was skippering a shark boat off Sugarloaf, finished pulling the gear in close and started heading straight out towards the Yallingup lumps, about 4nm out there was a couple of boats fishing a big lump that's marked on most good charts. My course put me about 70 metres off to one side of their position and to see their reaction I steered a bit closer, talk about abuse, you would think I was stealing their 18 year old daughters, and all for some bit of rock that's been thrashed for 25 plus years since I first fished it, well before GPS's were thought about.

Not that it was of any interest to me when one had over 5000 marks stretching from Windy Harbour on the south coast to north of Preston Beach covering the whole area I was licenced to fish.

30-50m is getting too close

Mon, 2014-06-23 10:22

30-50m is getting too close for comfort!

People also need to keep in mind, some people have marks close by to where others are fishing.

I've got marks which sometimes have people fishing close by, at times I'm there and someone comes by (Lets say within 500m) and I've done the same.

I've never pinged anyone.

Often I will drive over the mark and see if any fish are about, if not move on to the next.

The key to people getting too close is to make it look like your catching f$%k all :)
