For some. I have found out this year to pot on top or next to your favourite spots ( not to far away in sand) making the difference between 1 to 6 crays a pot. To a full pot.crazy shit ,against everything I’ve been taught

 That's what I was finding

Thu, 2019-11-28 05:36

That's what I was finding pots on top of lumps getting crays although this year they have been tiny crays compared to the past or even a month ago I didn't know you could even get a undersized white. Pots on sand have been getting me nowhere.

Some years they can be crazy fine

Thu, 2019-11-28 06:24

other years, you need to be close to the edge. Long and sometimes painful experience from doing  it for a living taught me that, while the big kills you could get by going way out in the sand were offset by the number of times you would draw a blank while they were just going off hard against the edge. And I stay with that to this day, right on the edge, on the sand next to the ledge, is where they are put.

It's a bit slow in shallow of Ocean Reef so I'm thinking of going deeper.

What depth does the sand start after the drop off after about 20m. Just trying to sort out my ropes.

Quick Advice and Quick questions :)

Wed, 2019-12-04 12:56

Hi Peeps

Just a couple question, relatively new to dropping pots, keen for some advice. I will be launching from Woodies and would be keen to know best location to drop if someone can give me some pointers, I plan to head out Friday or Saturday.

1) Is it best to head behind GI? What depth ground should I be looking for.?
2) Or is behind carnic any good, what depth ground should I be looking for?
3) Typically how long are most of you picking up the pop, next day? Or leaving it for days-week for better results?

Thanks, in advanced

Johno

johno Set your pots on sand

Wed, 2019-12-04 13:27

 johno

Set your pots on sand but as close to the reef as you can....but on sand. Avoid weed.

Try and set near a nice bit of reef, if nothing else, you will get some resident crays. Once they are walking, just keep moving pots till you hit them, reef less important, can be further on to sand once walking, but you need to be in line with their march path.....I have no idea how or where this is....I just keep moving pots till you hit em. When they are walking, you only need 1 good pot......

Basic rule for whites, for beginners

Wed, 2019-12-04 18:47

Anyone who is new to this. Find good, rough reds ground, something that shows lots of flare, with a sand edge to it. Not just hard bottom.  Drop right against the edge just on the sand. This is the safest, most reliable way of doing it. You will always catch a feed, colours may be mixed. Don't get sucked in to thinking you have to be way out on the sand, all the time. You will be, later, but start close to a good edge and go from there.

it can be very frustrating

Thu, 2019-12-05 17:28

seeing people bag out, you are not doing any good. Takes the fun out of it. I reckon I have seen it all, had some horror days, just for being a few metres too wide. Then the days when you have set them outside everyone else, way off the edge, took a big punt. You get to them last of the day, everyone else has picked up and left. Can't be any good , you think--they come up full!  Every single one of them. And you are the only boat to do any good that day, doubled everyone else. That day, they were wide.  So much to learn with whites.  So, just remember they were reds before they were whites, get close to where you can catch good reds.  Then take it from there.

Good results today out of

Fri, 2019-12-06 08:49

Good results today out of Mindarie, concentrated all 4 pots on one ledge that produces, can't spread out due to so many others coming in and bombing on top or around our pots, so I will stick with this ledge while it lasts and then move them out totally. 40 from 4 pots, 1 pot had 6 big red berried females (first time this year) and lots of bigger whites compared to the last week, not one was undersize. All 4 pots needed a full rebait due to lice, bait had been holding well previously.

Few dives Friday produced...pulled me pots for me first keeper...yeah hard! Had no legs and a head next him.. rebait and pull again Sunday.

Gezzz the patch on north tip of GI must have 40 pots easy in a 100 m radius....reminded me of snapper fishermen..
