White Hills Mulloway

Made a spur of the moment decision on Saturday morning to head down to White Hills for a fish (we had some visitors over from S.A. and the weather was good).  Turned out to be a good decision, landing my first West Australian Mulloway (60cm) on my first cast!

Interestingly, I caught it in the middle of the day, which from my experience Mulloway fishing in South Australia is pretty rare (normally night time is better).  Is it common to get Mulloway during daylight hours in WA?

It was also interesting to note that I caught it at the time the alamanac (tides4fishing.com) said would be on the best times for the day.

Anyway, I was happy.

PS - the beach is a little soft in places down there are the moment.  There's also weed in sections, but easily avoided.

Yeah, it was right on the high tide change.  Weather was beautiful on the beach too, so catching fish was a bonus that day!

As I was reading that report, I thought, I wonder what the almanac was sayin, hmmm, used to have them when I was younger, might start  glancin at one every now and then before a planned trip. Nice lil catch, tis the season, did you keep and eat it, Im willing to try the taste of a freshly bled and iced soapy, hell I even ate my first sambo, wasnt too bad, just a big tailor really

Yep, he was on the plate a few hours later!!!  This is the first smaller one (soapie) I've kept and eaten.  There are pretty soft, but the flesh is very white and sweet, with basically no blood meat at all (I did bleed him but there was little come out).  Plus, it tastes 10x's better when you've caught it yourself (much like the Sambo I would guess - not known for their table qualities!)

Cheers,

Drof

Don't know the distance, but

Don't know the distance, but can probably give you a good idea.

Going in from the normal White Hills entrance, hit the beach and head South (obviously). About 1km or 1.5km South you'll go around a little headland/point  (very minor). From there probably about another 1.5km South is where we were.  It's should be easy spot to pick, as it's where the inshore limestone reef is exposed and there is big pile of weed about 200-300m further South.  Also, the beach gets quite steep at this point (we fished pretty much at the start of the steep beach section)  Also, there is a clearing in the dunes right behind where I was fishing (one of those clearings that you used to be able to drive up into and turn around).

There wasn't anything particularly special about where we were, except for the reef which was providing a nice drop off into deep water.  However, the reef is quite long, so anywhere along there will probably be more or less the same.

Good luck

PS-  stay high on the beach as it's fairly soft further South down low!

The soapies will bite at any time really. Often they will school. I'm not a fan of eating them as they are not that special. Anything over 70cms can be good eating. Always great to land a Mulla, no matter what size.
