White Pointer lurking at cott....

Hi all,

Mate picked up this ray off the cott rock wall today. He also hooked into what he thought was a "great white" of 3m. Saw it cruise past, then took the bait. Line busted him off pretty quickly. Thing just jumped out the water. Pretty scary stuff on day like today, sun out, cott beach, swimmers etc.

heres some pics of the ray..

Better than holding it up on the end of a gaff. The way he is holding the ray is the safest way to hold a ray, if you really want to hold one at all.

Its always going to be a dilemma with rays off the rocks, cut the line at the waters edge, or bring it up which would usually involve smashing a nasty big hook in their wing.

Believe it or not a gaff placed in the edge of a rays wing to land it is not very life threatening for them. Have caught plenty of rays that have healed gaff punctures in their wings. Not that i am overly proud of the rays i catch whilst chasing other bottom feeders.

Some people debarb it so whoever catches it next time doesnt get hurt by it or step on it if they are swimming, the barb grows back over time.

Correction, the barb doesn't grow back. By cutting its tail off you are getting rid of its only means of defence

When i was researching on other forums there was alot of debate whether they grew back or not, majority points to yes it does and the usual double sided opinions.

Wed, 2010-10-06 21:51

If all you do is remove the barb with pliers they will regrow a new barb. But if you remove the whole tail barb and all(like on a smooth or black ray) then obviouly it wont grow back.

Dont really agree with removing the barbs myself. It is some form of defense, but not to a hungry tiger shark or a dolphin who has learned to target rays and avoid the barbs.

yep, spiracles for "breathing" the eyes are just in front of them. really hope that ray was killed quickly and became dinner if its gona be picked up like that. As for debarbing, i really dont see the point. pretty barbaric and pointless imo

nothing wrong with eating a small ray quiet delishes if the cartlidge is filleted out and rolled in a bit of pepper, salt and flour then lightly fried. Tried one about a year ago, resembled closely to KFC.

Hard up to eat rays

Thu, 2010-10-07 11:01

In my opinion if you are desperate enough to eat rays you'll eat anything .

Normal if I'm eating fish , I want it to taste like fish ! .....not chicken drowned in fat .

Did you get a look at the Great White or was it just your mate that saw it.  Also, is he a reliable source as I have mate who thing any shadow at all is a Great White so am usually pretty sceptical about sightings.

contrary to popular belief, small rays are really tasty if prepared correctly. When i say small i mean like 4kgs MAX (the bigger ones just taste like mud). slap some chilli on and BBQ and theres no turning back from there.

Aren't some sting rays

Thu, 2010-10-07 17:12

used as cheap so called scallops, they punch holes in the wings and sell them as scallops, only buy scallops with roe on (Gosnells markets used to sell with roe on) , then I know I'm getting the real thing.

We've caught rays in the boat, old fart just cuts the hook out, carefully while watch the barb.  He tries and turns them on their back, then get the hook out.

Yeah should have the peramedics on standby ready to give it mouth to mouth...

he just wanted to take a photo of a memorable catch i dont think there is any other way of handling a stingray than that. sure he could have just held it up on the gaff but im sure that would have raised a few eyebrowes.

IMO good handling and great that he through it back so it could swim away good catch!

just a hand in the mouth mate, no teeth so even big ones arent gonna mess ya hand up, stick a hand in and theres a plate you can grip quite easily to safely handle them. or alternatively, get it on to the lower rocks, quick photos there and back in the water.

i think youll find the hooks snapped due to bending or something mate, ive dragged plenty of big rays around this way, never had any probs. Where they are targetted for sport in South Africa this is the preferred method for safely handling them
