Why do you go for your AFL team?

I was thinking how fortunate I am to enjoy the success of the Hawks recent form being a supporter but it made me think people must have some stories of why it is they go for their team...

Here's mine,

Small town, 400 people and as a kid I used to go Yabbying with a mate in a blow up row boat in the little lake in the middle of town. His dad liked the Hawks so my mate followed his old man... I thought he was pretty cool being a year older and having his own boat so I chose the Hawks as well.

I'm 78 born so by the time I was getting into footy the Hawks were in a dominant era and it stuck...

Dads a Pie supporter so thank fuck he wasn't as cool as my mate with the boat!!!

It will be a sad day when Mitchell, Bourgoyne, Hodge hang up the boots but hopefully its after the threpeat!

When we first moved to Aus

Mon, 2014-09-29 23:54

When we first moved to Aus from SA in 07 we lived down south in hopetoun. I remember my first AFL game I ever watched was Dockers vs the dogs. Almost everyone in the small town went for the eagles, and Dockers being underdogs I decided to support them. Have stayed loyal to the Dockers through a few rough patches without any real success to speak of but its good to finally see them winning games other than just the derbys.

By the way I have a soft spot for the Crows being South Oz born.... I broke my neck in a car stack on the morning after the 97 GF win - That's another story....

Tue, 2014-09-30 06:45

Ran out of money while touring NSW and got a job hand planting cabbages mid winter while it was snowing in Goulburn, as soon as I got paid hitch hiked down to sisters and brother in laws place in Sheparton.
He had tickets to the Pies Carlton grand final when the record crowd happened, [forget the year] and as he was a Pie supporter I supposed I should barrack for the too.

Never stopped though do have a bit of a soft spot for Freo [South Fremantle supporter since playing junior footy in early sixties] and was very disappointed with the comparison between what they received on start up to what the Eagles got so don't ever expect me to barrack for the Eagles.

My old man used to force me to watch the winners as punishment when I was a kid, he used to support st kilda, to spite him I decided to barrack for collingwood even though I used to hate the game, now I love the game and stayed a one eyed pie supporter.

Nothing wrong with watching the Winners at 5 on a Sunday evening, just meant missing the afternoon session.

Tue, 2014-09-30 08:48

Moved from South Africa as a 13yo. Never even seen a footy game and played Rugby. Neighbour in Bassendean was an Swan District player and we jogged together. Bill Skirowski was his name and saw me one day with a State Rugby jumper on (age) and thought it an idea to drag me to SD to show how Rugby players line up tackles. John Todd was there and even though he wasnt keen on the idea allowed me to show a few interested players like the Narkle boys, Steve Richardson etc. Ron Boucher I am glad wasnt interested and I am so happy I didnt have to tackle him.

After that Leon baker (I think) and the narkle boys played touch rugby for fitness. So when the Eagles formed some off the players was in the original team, so just followed them.

But also love any team from the west better than any other - hence Two Team!!!!

Tue, 2014-09-30 10:32

Growing up i knew a few people following the mighty purple. Thought i'd see how that went and even though it has been many tough years, I have just rcently become a diehard supporter in the last 4 years or so. Always like supporting the underdog :).....

Plus the club is the same age as me, 1994 was a great year!

Tue, 2014-09-30 12:26

Born in 84 and eagles started up in 87. Don't know how or why I was an eagles fan but my first memory of footy was the 91 gf that the eagles lost to Hawthorn I think, then came back in 92 to win the first flag.

The teams I support are as follows
Eagles
Dockers
Anyone else that is not Victorian
Most Victorian Teams
Equal last going to Pies, Doggies and Bombers.

Freo

Tue, 2014-09-30 12:57

Born and bred Fremantle person, played all my juniors for Hilton Park, went down to Souths to have a kick as I followed the dogs since I could crawl. Supported Footscray in the VFL since they were also the doggies, but when Freo came along, it was like love at first site. So that's how I got there and that's also why.

Go Freo

 hmmmmm...intersting.

borin in 88...as a young one i use to barrach for essendon and collingwood (yes i have kids size jumpers in storage some where) and i remember the 94 GF where my mum and dad went, and my grandma made us all wear eagles gear and watch from our lounge room....never turned back which i am happy about.

god knows why i picked the bombers or the magpies, one can only think was because of the old bombers logol, and the magpies i just dont know.

Been fortunate enough to be eagles members since i can remember and have family season tickets in amazing seats!

we will be back dont you all worry!

Tue, 2014-09-30 18:20

I am not sure...might have had something to do with the Hawks winning the flag in 88, I don't remember anything before that football related...the old man barracks for the Dees so it seemed logical as a young bloke that the Hawks would be a better choice after chopping up the Dees in the GF. Something like that.

Hawks

Tue, 2014-09-30 19:00

In 91 when the 'local side' made it's first GF we were allowed to wear team coloured socks to school on the Friday before. Me not having a side of preference, a classmate of mine had a spare pair of (albeit Subi) socks and I decided to be 'one of the few' and counteract the support for the Blue and Gold. I remember being at a local wedding party in Two Rocks on game day and joined a few blokes glued to the idiot box all cheerin on the Weegurls. My intermission consisting of my support for 'the other' side was not very well reciprocated and my reminders after the match were't either haha, but I was safe, I was only 10. I remember one of the other kids scorin a cup of champas and we sipped it in between kicks out on the street that arvo haha, but Mum never suspected anything, she was too busy tending to my rather pissed Dad. Never looked back, ALWAYS HAWTHORN!

Some good stories there.... I do hope to see the Bulldogs rein again & also St Kilda but not while the current crop of players is involved... I have a soft spot for St k but they brought so much shit on themselves I don't think they deserved a flag... Its funny how teams grow on us but also how inner hate festers also...

Freo simply because they are the closest to where I live. If there was a new team closer to home in the AFL I would follow them. I think freo's premiership window might only be one more year so lets hope the boys get over the line!

My parents never had any kind of interest in the Afl or any sport so I used to go round to my grandfathers place and watch the footy. He supported the Eagles but they had never sat right with me.

He had played a few games for the Sharks in the Wafl so barracked for the Roos for a couple of years until Freo came onto the scene. Never looked back.

The old man was a wharfie and aspiring footballer with South making to the 2nds until he smashed his leg up on a motorbike .. Grew up and played my juniors with palmyra and willagee ( under Normie Rogers ) . Then played a few games with North freo amateurs until cars , alcohol and girls got the better of me . A few of the blokes I played with made it to the WAFL , one guy Steven Jackson made it to the Weagles .. Always been a South Freo fan and followed the Roos in the VFL until the Dockers come about in the AFL . Patience is a virtue apparently .

Dave Haddow was coach when I was there but John Hogg was the colts coach, I can sure vouch for some of the shin digs down there at Gill Fraser. Went on a club trip to Hong Kong in 1980. Only remember parts of that. Keep it under your hat that Norths were the Magpies, people around here will get the wrong idea.

Went to primary school in Wagin and played some footy with the Wagin Rovers with a young Peter Matera.

Had to support the Eagles when the AFL came about.

Before the AFL I supported the Hawks and still have a soft spot for them simply because of Leigh Matthews.

Loved hearing the commentator shout out my name on TV when I was a kid!!
