Wilbinga/Flat Rocks

Thinking about heading up that way sometime in the near future, Never been to flat rocks so was just wondering if people had any tips or info that would be useful.

Judging by near maps im guessing flat rock is the place just south of the shacks along the beach?

Where is the best place to go from waneroo road, two rocks? any particular tracks that are easier the others?

And just wondering about the weed what type of winds does the weed start to come in im guessing westerlys? but if it was say south easterlys do you still have a problem?

As you can see i am quiet the rookie around that area as i have never been before so if anyone could help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Jamie

Wilbinga

Mon, 2012-05-14 20:39

There are others on here who are far more experienced than I in the Wilbinga area, but I will share with you my experiences from exploring north of Two Rocks.

Wilbinga Road leaves Wanneroo just North of Military Road, the old entrance is blocked I think with some rocks and a ramp but there's a second entrance around a couple of hundred metres further up on the left.  If you follow this route down, there are a couple of bends early on with a dry dusty track then there is a looooooonnnnnng straight which is one of the worst rutted, corrugated roads I have driven on. Take it steady, certainly in the dark, it would be easy to tear a tyre or three. So that route takes you all but about a km or two from the coast whn you hit a fairly grassy clearing (this is a handy spot to lower tyre pressures) - head North West ish on one of the sand tracks choose wisely there are plenty of them, some easier and wider than others (I had some pretty awesome go-faster stripes on my Paj after losing a few fights with the bush).

Alternatively...and arguably more preferable is the route up from Two Rocks which can't be missed off Damepattie Drive.  Once tyres pressures are lowered its pretty steady going along a sandy track north.  The route is relatively consistent all the way up but take it steady its a 4wd playground up there and often a lot of cars bouncing around without dune flags.

probably the most important thing is to use Google and print out a stack of map pages for the various routes (sorry trees) or drop the Co-ords in your GPS if you have one its easy to get lost.

Lastly check out the beaches before you drive on them - it can get uber soft up there.

Weed wise, I have never seen it without weed, but the wind would definitely play a big part.  Mornings better with and Easterly and avoid it when there has been a strong westerly or northerly blowing through for a few days pulling the weed back in.

So, I hope thats a start and you will probably get some better info from some of the locals.

thanks alot grey really

thanks alot grey really appreciate all the info you put time and effort into sharing. deffinately a few tips there that will help. i think i may take the two rocks entry being closer and seems to be easier to navigate to flatrock then the waneroo rd entrances.

what kind of tyre pressure would you go? most places i will go 18 never seem to have any problems with that pressure and does the job nicely. By the sounds of things may be a good idea to park the car off the beach, just to stay out of trouble?

well if it is weedy it is definately going to be a no go, cant stand trying to fish in the stuff end up losing way to many rigs. I think friday by the looks of things will be alright se changing to easterlys in the morning.

Cheers,

Jamie

Tyres etc

Tue, 2012-05-15 15:18

Glad it was of some use.

Tyre pressure is a subjective choice and depends on both car and driver, I find 20-22 psi a fair starting point and then drop the pressure from there as conditions require.....so 18 should do you fine if thats what you usually drive. You shouldn't have any issues with the sandy track north of Two Rocks assuming you are in a 4x4, though I've heard that can get pretty sticky at times and I havent been up there for a fair while.

My own recommendation would be to throughly check the beach out before driving on it, especially anywhere it narrows, being mindful of the high tide marks etc.  If you are going in convoy fine, you can afford some risk but if solo take care.

As for weed, if it does get bad and you have to write off the fishing, Yanchep/Club Capricorn may be worth a shot on the way back down. I find North of the groin at Club Cap tends to provide some shelter from the worst of the weed.....sometimes!

definately was mate any

definately was mate any information helps.

yeah im in a 3.0L Nissan Patrol so should do the trick fine unless we take my mates old land cruiser either way both suited for the coniditions by the sounds of it. The tracks up there look a bloody maze though! especially heading towards flat rocks fair distance from two rocks. In your opinion what is the best way to go about navigating the tracks?

Yeah i always check the beach before driving on it as it can change very dramitcally and definately wont be going on any stretches of beach that have minimal distance between the water and dunes. I have the high tide time so should be all sweet.

Well im just wondering what type of winds bring weed to that area? obviously westerlys but i wonder if SE would be fine as that seems to be the forecast.

Yeah i think i will hit up club cap if worst comes to worst, that place does get sheltered even off the beach in the inside of the groyne, its just to the left that seems to have alot.

Cheers,

Jamie

A bit of info from an old fart....

Tue, 2012-05-15 16:18

Falt Rock is best approached through 2 Rocks. Let your tyres down before you go in and drive carefully. There are some rocks and a lot of dickheads who don't seem to understand how dangerous it can be when going too fast.

Flat Rock can be busy. There is heaps of coastline up there and it pays to check things out. I always manage to find somewhere where weed is not an issue and I refuse to fish in metro type crowds. Using poppers gives some great rewards and in places where the "lazy" bait fishers will not go because of reef snags. Poppers this time of the year are GREAT!. Autumn and Winter up there provide some great options. Just pick your days and move around a bit.

A word of advice... Do NOT venture onto the beaches this time of year unless you know where you are going and you have a support vehicle. The strong seas change the texture of the beaches and they can be like quick sand!

Good luck. May see you up there sometime.

thanks for the response

Tue, 2012-05-15 16:39

thanks for the response Uncut. Seems like im on the right track then with going from two rocks. yeah it is always a problem with 4wd being cautious is a must as alot of people have lost their lives due to stupid people doing idiotic things.

really so im pretty much bound to bump into a few people there? sure is alot of coastline and by the looks of things some real potential spots. Do you find certain winds that bring in the weed, im planning on heading there friday looks to be SE winds changing to E in the morning.

Might have to go pick up a popper and give that a crack over the reef ledges. What type of species would you come across using poppers up there?

Its a definate i will not be going on the beach unless i am 100 percent sure that it will be fine to drive on. I dont fancy losing my car or getting bogged for a few hours, better to be safe then sorry.

was hoping i may bump into someone from FW, you too mate be good to have a fish

Tyre Pressure

Wed, 2012-05-16 09:21

First time I drove the beach at willbinga for one of sherb's fish comps I was running around 18-20psi got stuck and dropped to 12psi and kept it there for the rest of the trip.

Now I always run 12psi when driving that beach. I dont see the point in getting stuck then dropping my tyres.

But I find different car, rim, tyre combos require different pressures to find there "sweet" spot.

I'm really only a newby to 4wding (last couple of years) but this is my experience with that particular beach.

Cheynes beach the other week didnt even bother to drop the tyres from 40psi and drove right up the beach.

But yeah agree with Uncut fully there are some sections that are full on and the beach seems to change dramatically depending on the time of the year.

I'm hoping to head that way this weekend to.  I'm in a white 90 series prado with a big 150mm pvc pipe (rod holder) bolted to the roof rack.

Might see you out there :) say hello !!
