Certainly optional.
If your going for Mackeral a bit of wire isn't a bad idea - although I prefer to just use leader and risk getting bitten off... not that I have actually caught any metro mackies yet !
If I'm up north and the action is hot, then I do run wire to try and limit the financial damage of loosing lures !

30cm
30cm length of single strand stainless steel wire - Mason, AFW etc.
Small, quality black swivel haywire twisted to one end, haywire twist a loop on the other end. Easy to fit and remove different Halco's then. Try and avoid clips to attach lures if possible (eliminating things that could fail).

Clips
if you don’t use a clip, how do you change lures?
I don’t like to use split rings on single strand wire, they have a bad habit of coming loose. I currently have pre-wired lures, but I can’t change the wire, I unlcip the trace and lure from the leader and attach another one.

Triple
Doesn't seem to be problem with the triple split ring on the nose of the Halco.

It's optional mate, I use a 1m strand of trace when drift baiting Mackies but only mono when trolling allowing for stretch. But like BJ says short length of wire doesn't go astray if they hit from the side.

As Bsir above mate I use clips so we can change lures over easily. Doesn't affect the swim pattern.

I run a short length of premade.
Usually the 11cm 60lb.
I find too much effects the action of the lure.
You only need enough to stop the bite off.

Changing
If I'm changing X-raps I cut the leader and re-tie it to the next pre-rigged lure.
