Wooden vs Plastic

hi all,

Just in the process of buying some cray pots. I'm not sure on whether to purchase the wooden ones, or the plastic ones?

Does anyone have any advice? Are the wooden ones still light enough for recreational use?

cheers

Wayne

the plastic ones I have are being replaced. they are OK, but not great.

And if the weight is a problem, maybe you can ask your husband to come out and help you lift them (jk) Tongue out

Wooden Base..

Wed, 2008-11-12 19:25

Plastic pots are way easier on both ali and glass boats. The steel bottoms you normally find on slatties rips shit out of everything so if you go that way get ones with the timber base. Of course, that means plenty of steel ballast bolted in to make sure the pot stays where you left it!

i've got a 5.4m ali trailcraft profish - was going to mount one of these on the side (www.craypotlifter.com) though with it being a side console i'm not sure if i'll have room for it to operate properly...

so does anyone have any thoughts on how this season will go? i've heard some people say it's going to be worse than last year:(

We've

Thu, 2008-11-13 07:37

always used plastics, have caught pretty consistently.  We've been told its easier for the cray to walk up the wooden slats than plastic.

Good luck everybody hope you all catch plenty of crays yummmmmmmmmy

The really beat up and scratched plasic ones work as well as the wood ones.  Buy used and they are likely to be seasoned for you!

Slattys!

Thu, 2008-11-13 10:55

Yeh wood (slattys) are better at catching crays but yes the plastics do still catch if well baited & more ballast used. Slattys are my pick because;

* Wood soaks up water and sits better on the bottom/doesnt move or roll

* Feels better to crawl over for crays

* Bait smell soaks into wood

* Larger neck for crays to go into

Yes they can mark up the boat but tippers are good and if that isn't suitable then just use some carpet off cuts.....cheap alternative to protecting your boat!

Rec fishers can bait & set pots on Nov 14th as Huggy said!

Dean, 2x6kg for plastics and 1x 6kg for wood based slattys, none for steel based!

Cheers Spess, plenty of pots selling quick atm...i've actually gotta do some work/rigging....shock horrorSurprisedLaughing

Wood vs Plastics

Thu, 2008-11-13 15:08

Wood wins hands down, plastics aren't called cacka catchers for nothing.Even with plenty of ballast in them, plastics roll while slatties sit still in the bottom

not long now!

Fri, 2008-11-14 07:20

Ive sold plenty of plastics over the last 14 years and one thing i learnt wasnt to write them off. I've sold plackys & slattys to many customers to have them come back and say the plackys out fished the slatty. Plenty of ballast & bait will make all the difference and i see even slattys float on the floor when i'm diving if they dont have correct ballast!

Bait, i personally dont like fresh, the bait needs to be aged a bit and oily stuff spot on. We use slimmys & orange ruffys on our crayboats (commercial) and yes tuna heads great bait too....just make sure ALL bait is fully defrosted so its bloody/oily/smelly before loading baitbaskets!

has anyone got any tips for cray bait?  I was going to go catch a few wrasse etc before hand and put those in the traps as bait.  I've heard some people put in cans of cat food?? also heard tuna heads are good aswell?

Roughy heads in one basket

Thu, 2008-11-13 19:09

Roughy heads in one basket and blue macks in the other!!! Leave the roughy bones in there as they still excrete the oil for a good week and a bit. Just change the mack over each pull.
