I'm not convinced its a rankin, the black spots behind the fins indicate that it would be a malabar groper and they do also have fright blotches, similar to those displayed. The pectoral fins also appear to be different from the rankin, but very difficult to tell from the photo.
Haven't had contact from neighbour since photo, his wife said they released the fish then caught caught another a bit bigger also released. Will try and find out what it was.
Pretty sure rankin are distributed in the nth west of australia and south east asia. Must have got lost on his way to ocean park fish ponds in shark bay
With Dumper and Adam. Looks too big to be a Rankin Cod.
I've found when Rankins get big, their spots aren't as defined as the smaller ones, going blotchy, rather than spoty. This one has very defined spots, and as Adam said, darker fins.
However it is an impressive fish nontheless, and if it is a Rankin, it is one to be envious of.
Not the best pic but from what I can see it looks like a very BIG Rankin. Here's a malabar I got a few months back.. http://fishwrecked.com/node/14933 definately looks different.
If your looking for the best tasting fillets, then I've found rankins and other cod species are best taken for the table in the 600-700mm range. I try to release the larger size specimens.
Good size fillet off a 600-700mm fish but not sinewy like the larger cod fillets can sometimes be.

Agree on the Rankin.
Agree on the Rankin. Absolute horse of a fish but even a better neighbour for sending you the fish

Cant keep any cod over 1m or 30kg. Cods are defined as all Epinephelus sp. so that would include rankins.

It is a rankin monster. I think the 1m rule is for all cod, but I dont think rankins ever approach that mark, hence no problem! JMO
