would you eat crabs from jervoise bay?

Hey all,

With all the dredging going on and the plumes of toxic silt that have been spreading up and down the coast, would you risk eating crabs from around woodies/jervoise bay and cockburn sound? Season will be open soon, but dunno if it would be wise.

What's your opinions?

Antisense ^_^

Shellfish are one of the first to show up pollutants

from what I understand, and are a good indicator of the quality of the water. Haven't heard anything about the mussel farms spread throughout the sound having issues, but then again, I also haven't been really listening.

Perhaps that may be a good point for you start? Find out how the mussels etc are going, and if they are having issues rethink your crabs?

mussels levels

are fine, we test every two weeks for everything from heavy metals to e-coli and different phyto planktons. If there was any problems we would be first to know. As for eating crabs, i cant see there being a problem as they are not a filter feeder, and most of the dredging plumes are being washed north due to the prevailing winds.

Good point about the

Good point about the commercial mussell growers. Hopefully the farms in the sound are being forced to do some pretty thorough testing :)

It would be nice if there was some test data publically available too. I heard fisheries have been testing mussels on markers in the swan and around the port mouth and found very high levels of heavy metals etc since the dredging began. Could just be rumour though.

I guess there's not much around this isn't gonna kill you tho right :)
